IRS Computer Software
« on: April 21, 2018, 02:29:42 AM »
I heard a story on npr yesterday detailing the antiquated state of computer equipment and software at America's IRS ( internal revenue service ). It seems a lot of their software is still written in a mysterious and outdated language known as "Assembly": https://www.npr.org/2018/04/20/604106157/irs-computer-glitch-caused-by-master-file-issue

It surely is a mainframe:
Quote
Believe it or not, at one time, the IRS's computing system was a state of the art marvel. In the early 1960s, people would make the trek to the IRS computing center in Martinsburg, W.Va., just to gawk, according to University of Georgia history professor Stephen Mihm.

"This huge mainframe facility that was truly state of the art, it was really cutting edge, so much so that people would go there almost as tourists

Now that was funny.

The IRS quality control document for programming
interfaces, (easily available via google) suggests
'Assembler programming for
IBM......' by Nancy & Robert Stern 1979.

Pps- notice assembler /not/ assembly  :icon_mrgreen:
Are you pondering what I'm pondering? It's time to take over the world ! - let's use ASSEMBLY...

Goes to show..

Assembler programs stand the test of time, unlike run-time dependent riddled RAD nonsense.

Yeah yeah but would you like to have to wire wrap all the connections in a PDP8 ?  :P

Yeah, interesting, right? I always used assembler, but of late I get confused because so many people insist it's assembly 8)
Maybe I am just old :(

Assembly language can also be called Assembler language, or simply Assembler.
There was a time frame where it was more often called Assembler than Assembly.

... and the network would be individual RS232 at 4800 Baud.
Wire wrap tools still exist  :dazzled:, I was looking at them on RS components yesterday.

I think the rough semantics go like this. You ASSEMBLE a set of mnemonics with an ASSEMBLER and the result is an ASSEMBLY. "asm" is less typing.  :P

Assembler was also called "Machine code" that might be from the c64

In spanish the same word is used for the language as the program (assembler): "Ensamblador".
