I have just had the joys of a major Win10 update. :(
« on: January 13, 2018, 12:28:41 AM »
It has stuffed up my desktop and does not appear that I can set my icon order any longer. Tried every option and they just mess it up to their preference. Then there is that PHUKING arrow on all of the icons. I had to turn all of the telemetry off again and still don't have a desktop that I can find anything on.

Which is why I wrote Desktop Icon Positioner in the first place :)

After a wasted hour and a half, its almost workable again, removed the unwanted trash they have tried to add, pissed off their security settings nag screen (I use other means) but look on the bright side, it gave me a different pretty picture when the startup screen is shown.

Jim, post a link.

Here's the only reference I could find on the current board even though I know I posted the 64 bit version here someplace - http://masm32.com/board/index.php?topic=1464.msg15177#msg15177

I'll put together another post with the source.

later...

Here's the whole thing-

To add to the irritations, Notepad replaced my own editor for the "txt" extension so I had to crawl through a new interface to find where to change it back again and I had to download Jim's winhelpfix.zip to get Winhelp back again.

Yet another, since the upgrade my Slimjet browser has become unreliable. Never seems to end, yet another M$ PHUKUP.

Hi Hutch,

Maybe turning off the Windows update service can be a solution for you. At work, I did it for two Windows Server 2008 R2 servers as the updates harmed some application services.

Erol,

Its not an option in Win10 64 bit. I have nearly everything working, just updated the browser yet again and its looking OK so far but it seems M$ have a bug in the current internet code.

I had to download Jim's winhelpfix.zip to get Winhelp back again.

@Jim,

You made some edits here, but the archive in the first post looks older - is that still a version that is supposed to work?

I use the old win32.hlp because I find the format easier to read and use and the search facilities much better.
Exactly.

jj-

The one in the first post that you referenced works.  You must however open a command window as  administrator and run the batch file.  Just right clicking on the file and running as administrator doesn't work (the %crtpth%doesn't point to the correct place anymore).  I'm sure there's a different command to use in the batch file but I don't know what it is.

Sounds too complicated for me, I just double clicked the batch file in Winfile.exe and it ran correctly and overwrote the stub that Microsoft had placed in the Windows directory.
