I have kept trying to post with that horrid mobile phone but kept getting too many errors so the folks at the hospital have allowed me to use one of theirs. I can keep up with what is happening but posting was a real pain.

Not sure how much longer I am a prisoner here but I guess all things come to an end eventually.

Title: Re: Hi from Hutch
Post by: hutch-- on April 19, 2023, 10:20:56 PM
It seems that the hospital will allow me to bring a scooter into the hospital as they are only small, quiet and clean. It would be smaller that a Gerry mobility device. I can take it into most shops and supermarkets so it should be no big deal.

It looks like they want me to return on an occasional day visit basic for any follow up treatments which is not big deal as I only live about a 5 to 10 minute ride from the best teaching hospital in the southern hemisphere. I have relatives who live in regional areas who have to spend hours travelling both ways just to see a doctor and that is after having to make an appointment beforehand.

Virtues of living in the big smoke I guess.

Thanks guys,

There were many lovely young ladies and fortunately I get on well with kids of this age but no blondes, they were from many different places, Thailand, India, China, Phillipines etc ...

While the average age was early 20s, I am at least their grandfather age so I dealt with them as nice kids. Some locals in the older groups but no blondes..

Blood sugar test, 16.0, --- 8:28 am. Friday 21 April.

Lucky a mate brought over a working blood testing gadget, the one supplied by the hospital did not work.

Very sad to report the news but I am reliably informed that Hutch passed away last night. He had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer a few weeks ago. He did return home briefly from hospital but was soon readmitted and spent his last days back there in their care. Steve will be greatly missed in the street by all his friends and neighbours. He really was part of the Surry Hills landscape. I believe his mother had lived in the house before him so even those of us who are approaching 20 years as residents felt like relative newcomers. He would regularly wander up and down our quiet street to give his eyes a rest from programming. Hopefully someone has access to his files so the community he built here can continue but I am not really across that. RIP Steve, Richard

Hi
I am devastated by the news of Steve's passing. Not only was he an influential figure, but he was also the founder of the MASM forum, where countless people like me found inspiration and guidance in the world of assembly language programming. Steve's contributions and expertise were invaluable, and his passion for the subject was contagious.

His loss leaves a void that will be impossible to fill. Steve's presence will be greatly missed in the programming community, and we will always remember the lasting legacy he left behind.

Rest in peace, Steve. Your memory will continue to inspire and guide many people as we move forward in the world of assembly programming. Thank you for all you have done.

I will miss you, cantankerous old bastard (http://masm32.com/board/index.php?topic=8291.msg90899#msg90899). The oldest reference I could find on the web dates August 2001 (https://web.archive.org/web/20010421065605/http://www.microbitware.cjb.net/), but I'm sure there are older ones (the screenshot below is about version 7).

When you started Masm32 over 20 years ago, Assembly was a dead language. Now I have over 5,000 Assembly sources on my harddisk, of which about one third full-fledged Windows applications. You deserve credit for that - without your baby Masm32, x86 Assembly would be a faint memory from the past.

Very sad to report the news but I am reliably informed that Hutch passed away last night.

I was shocked to read the bad news. But eventually, we are all born to expect the same fate sooner or later. I can still remember some 30 years ago when Steve convinced me to switch from DOS programming to MASM32. And, he never stopped expanding it.

RIP Steve. We will always remember you.

@hutchneighbour: It would be appreciated if you can post a link to the site of the funeral home where Steve's obituary can be seen.

It's very sad. Rest in peace. Thanks for the assembler.

What will happen to the forum? Who has the data from the hosting? Until when is it paid for? Gotta save the database, lots of good examples and answers here.

Rest In Peace Hutch. We will remember you, as your work for us was indispensable. What you gave us is now what we will save and use to improve remembering you. Hopefully we can organize a new place to get together if server is going down?

You will be missed greatly Hutch. A true inspiration to countless people.

I can't even remember how long I stayed using dos simply because I thought assembly in Windows was impossible.
Then you changed all that for me and many, many more people. A very sad day indeed.
Rip Hutch and may heaven be all 0's and 1's for you.

I just cannot believe this news. I am so sad. Rest in peace old friend. This forum, this community is where I am most active. If I am so into assembly one of the big reason is hutch, his work and this community. You will be missed! Great love from Turkiye!

as morgot said, I hope that someone is able to get a copy of this forum before they pull the plug and puts in on another server

Hi everyone,

I just heard through JJ about Hutch and had to come and join our Masm32 family. I am without words and Hutch will be deeply missed. He welcomed me warmly when I first came here.

It's now on us to keep his work to carry on. We cannot let it go.
Man, this is so sad....

Hello to All & Sundry.

By way of introduction, I was a Long time old friend of our recently departed "Hutch",...   :( :'(
(I first met him whilst engaging in a particularly obscure hobby in 1970, as a young teenager)

Firstly, may I Sincerely thank you all, for your Kind, sincere and obviously 'Heart-felt' comments.

Like Many that knew him personally & locally, (in SO Many diverse & different endeavours and walks of life), he WILL be Missed by us all,... So Sad,.. We,... (possibly much like he himself) often tend to live our lives, pursuing our Interests and activities, without thought relating to our Age, Health and Mortality so we are at this stage somewhat unsure about certain aspects.

Along with his Brother and a couple of Other Close friends, spent a few hours at the House yesterday reviewing the situation, Gaining access to his computers etc and searching for appropriate possible documentation etc.

Whilst I Was aware of Hutch's interest in MASM, Hutch also ran another Forum / Web site for Serious 'Bespoke Tailors and Cutters', It was only through the advice of 'hutchneighbour' that I was made aware of the two Forums and can also appreciate the intrinsic usefullness and purpose to both groups and the Need to keep them up and running and available etc.

Just thought I should let you all know, that I managed to find & speak with the 'Hosting' company here in Sydney and they were very friendly and helpful and at least for the time being All should remain in place and functioning without fear of the Site disappearing.

I have informed them of the situation etc and hopefully we will be able to gain Admin' access and begin appropriate discussions with your 'Community' of users about how to manage and look after this 'Resource', moving forward.

As both this and the other forum are Hosted together on their own Dedicated Servers, it may be that one of the members of this 'Community' may be More appropriately capable & able to take on and look after Both sites (to at worst keep the Software up to date and do regular Backups etc), as I can't help but feel you guys & gals are more PC Literate than the members of the other forum, being mainly Clothing makers and Tailors :)

I AM contactable, but may perhaps be better to discuss matters at greater length, once we have all the account information etc 'at hand'.

Thanking you all once again for All your kind words and thoughts,.. I will keep you all informed as necessary.

Regards,
Stewart

Hello (stoo23) Stewart, thank you for the info you provided. Member "jj2007" would most likely want to contact you. Jochen (jj2007) has been actively trying to figure out how to continue the forum, either here or another venue. Would be great if we could keep much of the original forum intact. Again, thanks for the heads up and for having the foresight to help out the community here. It would be a great honor to hutch to keep his legacy alive.

Sometimes he posted here about scissors etc. He was very proud of his old tools, so it's not a surprise that he had a "second life" here (http://movsd.com/BespokeCutter/index.php?topic=1233.0):
QuoteI have been missing for a month straight
« on: April 19, 2023, 02:29:36 PM »
I turned up at my local coffee shop one morning as pale as a sheet and really tired so some friends dragged me off to a local medical center who them sent me straight to St Vincents hospital. I got back home to turn my computers off and close a balcony door but was then kept a prisoner for 4 weeks with endless testing and endlessly woken up with more testing.

A mate of mine came to pick me up last night and got me home in a cab but after 4 weeks of broken sleep, endless testing and no exercise, I am only just coming good, still very tired but starting to shape up OK.

Hutch was a very special person, with multiple talents. Inter alia, he had a thorough knowledge of philosophy and geopolitics.

Hi,.. Well, I would suggest there would be NO problems in (at least initially) continuing to keep it 'Hosted' where it is.
They are a Very Good company, with good equipment and reviews etc and realistically could continue that way as long as it proves to be financially appropriate etc as it can be 'Administered' from Anywhere :)

As suggested, I should have Details soon and gain Access to the Forum and server etc,. Will keep you informed and happy to discuss / communicate as deemed appropriate by yourselves.
Cheers

True. I do have a wife and two teenagers to care for, but in my spare time I spent an awful lot of time on the forum, often arguing with Hutch about 64-bit vs 32-bit code, or geopolitics - he was very versatile

Let's honour him by posting code, ok?

Hi, all members

Hutch-- posted his wish there.http://masm32.com/board/index.php?topic=10473.msg115735#msg115735 (http://masm32.com/board/index.php?topic=10473.msg115735#msg115735)
Hutch-- wanted to walk on the Great Wall, but his wish did not come true. because the relations between China and Australia don't improve enough. This was quite regrettable.

i would guess:his greatest wish was letting the masm become the first programming language for computers.

Hutch, we will all miss you VERY MUCH.  You made the world a better place, and you've contributed more than can be expressed in words.

I'm quite shocked to have learned this today, I am a new member, but I have been lurking on these forums for a number of years, where I became interested in assembler, and nearly every bit of external reference I found about MASM32 had Steve's name on it.

I only saw a YouTube comment he left me about a week ago, but it was a month or so old.

It's a little bit hard to believe to be honest. May he rest in peace.

I'm very pleased to see that this forum is alive and that other people looked at the work of Hutch with appreciation, so it can continue for more time.
Finally i'm happy for all of you, i'm glad to know about all of you, i hope you are all right.
What sense can have computer programming without assembly? Maybe just more business crap...Assembly will make you free in the programming world...and maybe beyond... :azn:
