Title: A job for Dave
Post by: jj2007 on February 15, 2014, 08:12:25 PM
NASA has forgotten how to communicate with their ICE satellite... and it seems we have one or two Daves here who could help them

ICE is returning to Earth (http://www.planetary.org/blogs/emily-lakdawalla/2013/09181511-ice-is-returning-to-earth.html)
QuoteWhen it comes back to Earth, it would be possible to recapture it into a halo orbit (that is, an orbit at the L1 point). But to do that, we'll have to reestablish regular communications with, and control of, the spacecraft.
...
A big question is whether we even still know how to communicate with the spacecraft. It was built in the 1970s, at the same time as the Voyagers. But we've been in continuous communication with the Voyagers since their launch; the same isn't true of ICE. So the first step is for a team at Goddard Space Flight Center to research that question. Can we figure out how to talk to ICE? What will those communications cost?

Hi,

Nice find.  Someone apparently forgot about planned
obsolescence.

Thanks,

Steve N.

Jochen,

that's a similar scenario like in the movie Space Cowboys (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Cowboys).

Indeed
QuoteIKON, an obsolete Soviet communications satellite is about to fall out of orbit, and NASA is instructed, for political reasons, to capture it, rather than allow it to crash. The on board systems respond, but are so archaic that nobody at NASA understands them.

you can bet it's well documented..... someplace

every little black box on every piece of gov't equipment has a mountain of documentation to go with it
i can't imagine how they find room for all of it

so, here is my proposal: Ask Saul Rubinek.
Quote
Saul Rubinek as Artie Nielsen is the Special Agent in Charge at Warehouse 13. A former cryptographer and codebreaker for the NSA, he has spent over 30 years at the Warehouse and is very knowledgeable about artifacts, both in the Warehouse and out in the world. That sounds reasonable.

do you mean this Joanne Kelly (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/34/10.17.09JoanneKellyByLuigiNovi2.jpg)? I've never seen one of the Jack Hunter movies.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1069207/episodes?ref_=tt_ep_epl (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1069207/episodes?ref_=tt_ep_epl)

the movies weren't as good as they could have been
i typically like that kind of movie
with these, it's hard to say where they went wrong, really
i guess they were too predictable or something

is that a kind of Indiana Jones?

I like another type of movie. In the 60s I've watched Mannix (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mannix) and The Outsider with Darren McGavin (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darren_McGavin). In the 70s one of my favorites was The Rockford Files (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rockford_Files) with good music by Mike Post and Pete Carpenter. I have a weakness for the characters created by Robert B. Parker (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_B._Parker): Spenser: For Hire (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spenser:_For_Hire) and Jesse Stone (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesse_Stone_%28character%29).

Today I prefer more light fare: Blue Bloods and Suits.

I liked the "Rockford Files" but couldn't stand Angel. Stopped watching "Duck Dynasty" because I can't stand SI.

You guys just live in the wrong place for attractive minimally dressed ladies, come to Sydney (the CBD area) in the summer time on a hot day and you will see more good looking ass than fills any of the crappy p0rn sites for free.

There are a few basic rules, don't look like a tourist and don't "oggle", just take in the scenery.  :P

That could be hard for an European not to speak about Dave. He's from Texas.

it was an attempt to be like Indiana Jones

Harrison Ford = "rugged looking"
Jack Hunter = "pretty boy"

the storylines and dialogs for Indiana were also much better

i remember Rockford files - used to watch it all the time
i was a fan of James Garner from the old Maverick show
Mannix was ok, too

by the way - i live in Arizona, not Texas, thank you very much

Gunther,

if you liked Mannix and Rockford, you'd probably like these

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080240/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080240/)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068135/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068135/)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0062568/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0062568/)

there was also Starsky and Hutch  :P  a bit dated

The Mod Squad was another good one

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0062589/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0062589/)

there were many such crime drama series back then

yes, of course: But Magnum, P.I. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnum,_P.I.) was in the 80s. In the middle of the 80s I've watched MacGyver (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacGyver) and of course Miami Vice (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miami_Vice). I've never watched that Dallas or Dynasty garbage.

In some way that was my gateway to the world. As former resident of East Berlin I couldn't visit the the world behind the Iron Curtain. So, radio and television was very important for me during that time.
