Hello,stoo23

Thank you very much for everything you have done to the Masmforum. the forum still is alive.

We know a lot of the information about you provided. Running and maintaining the forum requires significant costs,
For the past 30 years, Hutch has selflessly worked for the forum. no income, only pay out, All the reasons are doing what Hutch believes it is valuable. How difficult is it for Hutch!

If there is no major sponsor or some great company support for the forum, as hutch said:"Not sure how much longer I am a prisoner here but I guess all things come to an end eventually."

OH, BTW,... Just so that you are All aware,...

I have been contacted by a Senior Member, who has suggested Paying for the Next 12 Months (as was initially Intended to be done by Hutch), for Both the MASM and Bespoke Cutters and Tailors Forums.

I have Yet to discuss that option further with them.
I will Obviously Report any further developments in regard to that matter :)

I am obviously More than Fine and Happy for that to occur and allow everyone the time to Truly 'Sort things out' etc, as well as guaranteeing the Security of things as they are existing.

MY only Personal Dilema with regard to that, is the actual Regular Maintenance of the VPS Server as such,.. I am in No way a Sys Admin OR a Linux / Server Guru, by ANY stretch of the Imagination.

I am and will be making Copies/Backups of ALL the Files and Data on the server, but that has Nothing to do with the actual Server Software and it's regular System Maintenance or Backups.

I have a feeling (after our quick perusal through Hutch's Computers the day we were there), that he was Backing Up (Probably) Both the Actual Server AND the Forums onto one of the Machines there, as he had a Local Apache Server running and there was MASM & Cutters specific Drives/Partitions etc on the machine.

I happened to note in a post on here elsewhere, Hutch expressing his Dislike of Linux Servers, (why, I am unsure really), but he had Far greater Knowledge than myself in these matters.

Self Managed VPS is Great,.. If you really Are capable of doing everything by yourself :)
So just somethng WE need to sort out depending on How we move forward.

Hi guys and gals,...
Apologies for not appearing to be around,..... busy,.. and sleeping

I am and will be Replying at greater length shortly, but in a 'First' response,.....

FREE hosting ??!!, ........ Surely, you Jest ??,..

I mean, honestly, Yeah,.. that will work,.... :),.. NOT !!
FFS, give me a break,...... as far as I'm concerned,.. Solved :)

And just quickly,.. IF Ihost/Uhost/Wehost/ Whatever the F**K host their name is, is SO good,.. why then is the Newly created
http://masm.my-board.org/ forum,.. NOT hosted there??

Seems to be from IFastnet based in the UK ???, I think. ... Kinda makes you wonder.

I have NOT been contacted by 'lingo' directly and NO,.. I will NOT be handing ANYTHING over to someone that has Only just joined the forum and made 2 x posts. (I can almost See AND Hear Hutch's response to a suggestion like that),.. :)

If you are serious, introduce yourself, and provide some background :)

From MY 'limited' time here,.. may I suggest there are some long term existing Senior Members here whose thoughts and opinions I would seriously consider and/or defer to regarding the various possible futures of the Forum/s ... and.....

Secondly,... My Vote is to NOT change the current names !!

The current owner of the names would certainly seem like it is Hutch to me,.. arranged via dotster and will probably have to Provide proof of passing to release current ownership.
I have already initiated communication with Dotster and am awaiting their reply.

My thoughts on that, would be that You guys take on, Pay and Own the various MASM names and the Bespoke Cutters own movsd

Not sure Who or How that can or could work, but as Hutch is gone, is something that MUST be considered moving forward.

Hi,

Thanks FORTRANS, we may have to establish a Paypal accout or something.

:)

Well I was thinking an EFT or bank to bank transfer.  I have
done those before.  I have not used Paypal and don't know
about it.  You can send me a PM with your e-mall address if
you want to talk things through.

The Workshop / Non-Forum Problems: Why not use a code repository
« Last post by bluedevil on June 09, 2023, 07:59:19 AM »
Hello friends.

I know we still cannot solve the administrative and financial problems of our beloved forum. But I want to suggest an important thing.

Dear friends in my opinion we should "also" open a MASM-SDK organization on github(or gitlab). Then we should put MASM32 SDK and MASM64 SDK to there. We should license them if they do not have licensed by hutch--. So that we can easily improve, bug fix, typo fix and release new versions of SDK's. People can easily contribute and issue problems. We can hold our sdk's more updated. And we don't have to be afraid that they will disappear suddenly.

Until now, hutch-- himself tracked issues, fixed typos/bugs and released new versions. From now on we should do this on Github(or gitlab)

After SDK's, we should put important or community driven projects and code sniplets(maybe?) to our our code repositories. We can put member projects(You know; some member projects are full-fledged projects).

P.S. I am very aware that most (total?) of the macros for masm64-sdk has written by vasily. We have to ask him first. But I do not have direct communication with him.

BTW folks, those are just thought. I love assembly programming. And I really do not want to lost anything on this forum. I saw many forums and portals has gone in one night! Using a code repository solves many problems.

What do you think? I can't wait to hear your thoughts too.

Regarding the personell ..., I want to propose Mikl__ as a candidate for admin. He has already experience in moderating/administrating a forum. He is very kind, neutral, open minded and not driven by emotions.

Some other names were already mentioned, e.g. Japhet, Vortex, Biterider, Fortrans, Gunther, caballero, Siekmanski, etc. pp.
There are many suitable members for being moderators or admins. Sorry if I missed a name ...

I just want you to keep some things in mind ...

Regarding hosting a forum:

In general one can say: "For cheap, there is only cheap!"
  • A frequently accessed forum needs to be accessible 24/7 from around the globe.
  • It needs security functions to be bulletproof against DDoS, Spam-Bots, etc. ...
  • It also needs reliable hardware and software (OS), easy to access and to manage for the admin/owner.
  • A good and reliable service from the hosting company.
  • some additional things that I don't have in my mind yet
This all has it's price and to be honest 71 AUD (44 €) is not much for it. If you want to move the forum to another hoster with all the benefits - or rather necessities - you need something like Hetzner.

Regarding driving a forum:

I would prefer a model of an admin and some moderators with extended rights.
This way the admin can focus on the basics, e.g. hardware, software, finances, etc. ...

Rotating the administration every two months is a pain, for the admin and for the users. If you never administrated a forum, you'll need several months until you are well established in the role.

Why not paying for an additional month and then we/you have time to think about the ongoing procedere.

Just my two cent.
