Win7 keeps file handels of EXEs open, even if not running
« on: December 17, 2012, 02:28:45 PM »
I just want to share the following  information for the case other will get the same problem:

In the last weeks I've recognize a strange behavior on my Windows 7 PC: when you create or execute a EXE, the System keeps a handle of that file open for a few seconds, even if it is not ruunning. This makes rebuilding is impossible. Since the last week this time has increase up to  20-60s, which makes it nearly impossible to work.
My first assumption was that the AV cause that problem, but removing it doesn't solve it.
Fortunately google points me to the right discussion.

Reactivating the Application Experience Service (AeLookupSvc) has solved that problem for me.

regards, qWord.

I found this.

Andy

"AeLookupSvc" is a system service with the display name: "Application Experience". "AeLookupSvc" processes application compatibility cache requests for applications as they are launched. If disabled, you may not be informed of compatability issues with certain software.

"AeLookupSvc" is not a system essential service. You may disable it, if it makes your system slow.

"AeLookupSvc" related information:
Memory usage:
Launching method: System Service with svchost.exe
Directory:
File name:
Company name: Microsoft Corporation
System essential: No
Virus/Spyware/Adware: No
Take care,

Hi qWord,

What's the service pack level of your Windows 7 installation? I suspect they didn't fix it with SP1.

the "Application Experience" service keeps a handle open until the compatibility info has been cached
not sure it's really a bug   :P

if you disable the feature, maybe you have to disable the service, as well   :t

SP1 and all newer updates. Even my feeling was/is that the problem has begun after the last patch day.

it is that you have to enable/start the service to solve that problem - do not ask me why , but it does work (at last for me).

I would call it a vulnerability in addition to being a performance hit.

Application Experience in System Configuration on my windows 7 64-bit is set to "Manual".
Have no idea if this is correct. To my knowledge I did nothing to the settings for this program.
In System Configuration it can not be changed from manual.
How to proceed?????

Manual is probably the default setting for the Application Experience Service
try setting it to Automatic   :P
