Today Le*ovo offered to replace the motherboard of the Thinkpad at no charge.

Anti theft is the reason they gave for designing a computer where a forgotten or lost BIOS password renders the motherboard useless and would need to be replaced to get the computer functional.

They are sending me a box to send it back in.

I am happy this has been resolved to a win-win for everyone.
