Repair or reinstall ie 6

I think my ie 6.0 is corrupt.

I would like to reinstall it, but I can't find a way.

I tried to use ie.inf to install and it says I have a newer version.

In IE 6.0, I used the restore default button and it said restored with errors.

I had problems with I.E. 7.0 messing up another program, so I really don't want to try a higher version.

I only use IE when I have to.

Looking for suggestions.

Take care,

a lot depends on how (or when) you installed IE7
if you installed IE7, then installed SP3, you are kind of stuck
some of the files required to properly uninstall IE7 are missing after SP3 installs
i do recall seeing some "long-winded" manual methods of doing it

don't be afraid of IE8 - it is a bit better than IE7 - that's the version of IE that i use

assuming you got past the IE7 uninstall...
it's possible that an "IE6 repair" method would do
google around for that one - i suggest you try it, first

you may be able to uninstall and re-install IE6
you open the Add-Remove snap-in in Control Panel
on the left, there is an icon for Add/Remove Windows Components
that is where you want to go to uninstall or re-install IE6

here's an IE6 repair method - eldergeek is reputable   :P

http://www.theeldergeek.com/repair_ie6.htm

i like method #2

i ran with IE6 as long as i could
i finally got tired of the messages saying i needed to upgrade
knowing of all the IE7 problems, i went to IE8
the install is a little more involved, but worth it

Magnum

I tried method 2.

It said I have a newer version already installed.

Guess I don't have a choice.

I.E. is freezing up a lot, slow,etc.

Have some questions because I want to try something out.

ie.inf is recommended for reinstalling i.e., but I have at least 2 versions.

I ran one but it tells me there is a newer version already installed.

I just want a clean reinstall.

I was thinking of starting up in safe mode and deleting i.e. manually.

Then roboot and try one of the ie.inf to reinstall.

Advice, comments would be much appreciated.

Andy

Hi,

Same here.  Started a couple of weeks ago.  Locks up a
minute+, then a message pops up about a script being slow.
And it is spreading to more sites, or I.E.6 is getting sicker.
I wonder what would happen if I uninstalled Flash.

Regards,

Steve

I have asked in several M.S. forums and and have gotten no reply.

Another guy installed I.E. 8 and didn't like it.

He uninstalled it but parts of it are still on his computer and he can't install 6.0.

I am going to keep plugging away till I find out what's going on.

I consider myself pretty mellow but this is starting to pi@@ me off.

There are way too many coincidences.

Andy

P.S. I am considering running I.E. 6.0 in a debugger.  :icon13:

i haven't had any trouble with IE8
but, i also have automatic updates disabled
from time to time, some ms update will come along and foul up the works

this latest java thing may have something to do with it
although, i have 7 update 11 installed and don't have any troubles
someone else's update may conflict, though

Magnum

We are talking about version 6.0

The problems I and others are having seem to be happening just when using ie 6.

I just went to safe mode and deleted iexplore version 6.0 sp3.

I reinstalled the the sp2 version and will see how it works.

I am using it now and it's fine so far, but it's only been a few minutes.  :dazzled:

Andy

I have automatic updates disabled as well as Background Intelligent Transfer Service.

I am a scientist by training and this is an experiment for me.  :t

good deal
that means you got rid of IE7
at that point, you can install IE8, if you like, and it should uninstall cleanly

Magnum

I didn't have ie 7.

I'll pass on getting ie 8.

I am currently working on why I can run .reg files

and

When starting a daily reminder program, windows pops up and says

Please wait while windows configures M.S. Platform SDK ....

Feature is on a network resource that is ....

From Event Viewer, Application Log File

Product: Microsoft Platform SDK (3790.1830) -- Error 1706. No valid source could be found for product Microsoft Platform SDK (3790.1830).  The Windows installer cannot continue.

The SDK is still working as far as I know.

It's installed just for the help files with the newer APIs.
