Bratton said Thompson was involuntarily discharged from the military in 2003 and a "weaponized ax" - sharpened on both sides - and a knife was found during a search of his home.

What does it mean that "both sides were sharpened."

I ask because I think that axes are meant to cut wood.

The term "Weaponized" refers to a "tool" that has been modified to make it more formidable as a weapon,and less useful as a regular tool.
(IE: perhaps an axe with a sharpened handle as well as a dual bladed head.)
