I will be helping a friend with her infected computer.

What virus scanner/recovery program would you recommend that I can put on a pendrive ?

MalwareBytes is free (not the premium edition)
it's one of my main tools for eliminating malware

i occassionally use Ad-Aware
it will locate some things that MalwareBytes will not
but, it's an on-access scanner
i disable it when i am not using it

the other tool i use is HiJackThis
you really have to know your way around to use it - i don't recommend it for the average user
and - you can make a nice mess if you remove something that's needed
