Here's another report from a cyber security firm: Quick Heal Quarterly Threat Report, 2016
Quote from: Quick Heal Technologies Threat Report
Growing Threat of Ransomware
Ransomware remains a rapidly growing threat in 2016, according to the report. One of the fastest moving threats in this category isTeslaCrypt, which emerged a year ago and has employed new infection and propagation techniques in 2016. New variants of the TeslaCrypt Trojan, as described on the Quick Heal blog, make their way into the computer systems of unsuspecting users to hijack images, spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations and other files.

I have a multiple approach to the list of problems here, never open something that you don't know what it is, never trust a downloaded file unless you know what it is and where it comes from and keep a disk image to overwrite any failures that are usually self inflicted.

There is now a TV program where BOTS battle things out,and it seems it is a series.

Also I caught a show with computer gamer's going at it in competition, this is now considered a real "Sport"..they have leagues and teams with players pulling in 6 figure salaries.

So, intresting question - is it possible win, by breaking some code ? Clear, that for win is need to have something not breakable - as used or gates, or code. So, if no iron gates - best way is to save something for making archicode. But if to do it in classical way, by crypt and decrypt data - for smart cleaner in office, you'll and became hacker, or ...

...Here is a recent post from Bruce Schneier's Security Blog: Real-World Security and the Internet of Things, July 28, 2016
Not only is the blog post accurate, interesting, and informative, but the comments are thought-provoking,...

...Also,...this article from, NetworkWorld: Cisco: Potent Ransomware Is Targeting the Enterprise at a Scary Rate, NetworkWorld, July 27, 2016
The downloadable pdf report is here: Cisco 2016 Midyear Cybersecurity Report pdf

Quote from: Cisco 2016 Midyear Cybersecurity Report
Ransomware is dominating the malware market. Although it is not a new threat, it has evolved to become the most profitable malware type in history—and businesses are now becoming a target of choice for some ransomware operators. In the first half of 2016, ransomware campaigns targeting both individual and enterprise users became more widespread and potent.
A small but growing number of malware samples show that bad actors are using Transport Layer Security (TLS), the protocol used to provide encryption for network traffic, to hide their activities. This is a cause for concern among security professionals, since it makes deep-packet inspection ineffective as a security tool.

I don't get it. How does a victim make a payment for ransomware, and why can't governments / police track down the recipients? Freeze their accounts, or whatever?
I am NaN ;)

RRR314159,
Excellent question. I have a theory about that,...it's a bit unconventional,...
The Police are part of the scam (they don't hire them for their high IQs).
Where do you think the 'perps' get all the information that they need for Identity theft ??? Government databases,...

If you GOOGLE something like: FBI cyber-crime statistics,...you will get a listing of sites like: FBI -- Cyber Crime,...or, 2014 Internet Crime Report pdf

...But,...in reality,...the FBI or Local Law Enforcement rarely solve any of these cases (with a successful prosecution of the criminal),...
