If you start with an XP install disk does the installer recognise the USB drive ?

   Yes, that is what I meant when I said:

   The boot disk was a Windows XP installation CD.  I did not run
the installation any further than setting up the "service console",
CLI, as I did not want to damage the XP installation in the external
box.

   It was assigned to drive D:.  And the setup program had me
log onto it to establish the CLI.  Some files are locked from the
command prompt.  I tried to look at MSDOS.SYS for instance.
