This is turning out to be a very challenging project.
I am trying to get an R-60 IBM Thinkpad working right.
It was booting up into Win XP but it was on F: drive. ??
Later it said there were errors on the C: drive, it fixed a few buy I aborted it which was probably dumb of me.
Now I have set a password for the hard disk and either I am putting in the wrong one or who knows ?
I can't boot from a bootable pendrive or P.E. disk.
I tried a password recovery program on a pendrive, but no go.
Paperweight ?

that may not be what you want - just google til you get happy :biggrin:
if your password has numbers, don't use the tenkey pad to enter them
I can get it started and have trying for a while to figure out why Windows isn't recognizing the network adaptor and some other hardware.

You'll have to reboot for it be able to start, and it can take some time, especially if there are bad sectors; progress can also appear to hang sometimes - if there's no disk activity for an extended period, then it probably has got stuck (hard reboot and do over.)
I have got it going.
Had to reinstall Lan and Audio drivers so it could see some of the hardware that Windows could not find.
It's able to connect to my wireless network, install progs etc.
Chkdisk did not find any problems.

Did you check the event logs?
There were no errors in the Application Section.
I want to install my Business Office so I can write and read doc files.
I did what m.s. said to fix this, but nothing has worked so for.
No biggie, I think there are freeware programs that can open and write to doc files.

If its a dud disk, get another one and re-install Windows. It will save you some massive amount of grief.
The laptop is my daughter and is several years old.
She lent it to someone and it got a virus.
It was cleaned.
I was trying to tweak it and deleted something important and then it wouldn't boot right, so it was put away in storage.
I have installed AVG, and Spybot, and checked the disk for surface errors.
It has only 1 Gb of ram, but it runs pretty fast.
Looks like a little more work adding RAM than for a desktop.

I was going thru my computer parts box and found an IDE drive.
I started wondering if I could backup an image to it from my laptop.
The good, the bad, and...
The good is that I learned where the hard drive is and took apart the keyboard and disconnected the backup battery.It was a struggle with my large fingers.
I could get into XP but not without a password. I wanted to get into the BIOS to eliminate need for a pw to access hard drive.
IBM informs me that my computer has been tampered with.
No Sherlock, it's being worked on. Was it designed this way so someone would have to buy a new hard drive ?
This isn't a NSA computer here. :t

well - you're working on an older machine :P
laptops and notebooks are famous for being stolen, moreso than desktops
manufacturers try to put a certain layer of protection in there
over time, these protection layers have changed (hopefully improved)
if you google around, you can almost always find work-around or "kill switch" methods
which, kind of defeats the whole thing - lol
i guess they assume the theif doesn't know how to google :biggrin:

I called your customer service and got treated very poorly.
I wanted help with resetting the password on my BIOS so I could use my computer.
The person said there was no help available.
I ask for a supervisor and he said there was none.
I asked for his name and he said, "I have no name."
Is this standard protocol for IBM ?
I think it's reasonable to be treated with respect.

I had an older T-series ThinkPad. The great thing about the T-series is that the hard drive has a hidden partition that has a re-install of the Operating System loaded on it. The R-series may have the same feature,...I don't know. To use this method, you must interrupt the normal start-up of the current Operating System by pressing the BLUE button. The machine will then re-install and configure the Windows Operating system and re-format the hard drive to the original factory specification,...this takes about an hour.
There are, however, some really nasty malware components out there,...some that will over-write your boot sector,...in which case, the re-install program will fail.

The 2nd option could lead to a complete failure of the computer.

Today a nice computer technician said that it would take a mother board replacement to restore the I Bee MM Dinkpad.
He told me about various ways that computer companies do to "supposedly" deter theft.

I sell you a custom drill for $300. One day something falls over the cord ripping it from the wall and damaging the plug.
You are familiar with electronics and decide to replace the plug.
When you plug the drill in, a hidden compartment opens up and a tab comes out that says "This drill has been tampered with and is now non-operational."

It's not stored there. Already tried that.
Like the earlier post said, unless they have a secret backdoor that no one knows about, I will be asking for a MB replacement.
And no, I will not be doing any dumpster diving to find a used one. :t
