Title: nasty wrinkle in Window 8
Post by: shankle on February 16, 2013, 08:45:29 AM
I know - Windows 8, but I got it for $15. That's my excuse. :(

I have my data separated from Windows and use DVDs to back it up
besides my regular full backup with Clonezilla-live.
Well Windows 8 won't read the DVDs.
Instead it wants to format the DVDs.
As I understand it, Microsoft in their infinite wisdom, did not include
programs to read DVDs. I know there are programs like K-lite codex
pack but I think they are for Video crap and not text and such.

I assume you brave souls that ventured into the wonderful world
of Windows 8 have solved this problem. Sure would like to hear how
you did it. Sigh.....

Windows 8 doesn't have a program to play a movie DVD but can read a data DVD no worries.
No codecs needed to read a data disc.

Google will consolate you: windows 8 dvd drive not working (http://www.google.com/search?q=windows+8+dvd+drive+not+working) - "About 344,000,000 results"

Astonishing - I can't believe Windows 8 has so many users ::)

Thanks for responding guys.
Yes I can burn a DVD with imageburn but that's not the problem.

When trying to read a DVD Windows 8 wants to format a text/MASM
DVD and I can't get past that.
I use a DVD as an extra backup for my data that's in a separate partition
from Windows. This procedure worked just great in Windows 7.
I found out that "k-lite" will play movies and such. This is of no use
to me, as the files I am backing up are MASM/GoAsm files.

I backed up Windows 7 just prior to loading Windows 8 and am
just about ready to dump Windows 8. Loss of $15. Not the 1st
time I have done something stupid.

Sinsi I am curious how you get Windows 8 to read text/MASM files .

What is a "text/MASM DVD"? I am assuming it's just a disc with text (.asm) files on it?

Problem seems to be fixed .

Procedure
Used Image Burn to do a full format of the DVD. Then burned the Masm32
folder to the DVD.
Then in Windows 8 I was able to pull up the Dvd and look at a single file.
Very slow but doable.
This is something I would rarely do as the purpose of a 2nd Masm32
backup is for insurance.

windows may not be the problem
it may have to do with writing speed
we had that conversation in another thread

PROBLEM SOLVED. Not that anyones interested.

With I first got this computer is came with Windows 7 Pro 64-bit and NO OS CD.
1st thing I did was back it up with Clonezilla-live.

Well I tried the cheap $15 Windows 8 Pro upgrade. Had a lot of trouble with DVDs, Metro,
Losing connection all the time when playing Bridge etc. etc.
IMHO Windows 8 Pro 64-bit is the worst OS I have ever had on my puter. NO MORE!
The thing is strictly for kids and button pushers that want to play whatever they play.....
I now have a working Windows 7 Pro 64-bit OS and am happy.
Hope this helps someone else from getting a cheap Windows 8.

Thanks for the info.

I am glad that things are better.

I am interested in your feedback so I can make better informed decisions on a future different O.S.

Does 64 bit mean you essentially have twice the amount of registers ?

yes, there are a lot more registers. Please check out, for example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86-64 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86-64) and of course the Intel and AMD manuals.

Hi Magnum,
As Gunther says there are more registers and supposedly faster processing.
Also it grabs 8 bytes at a time instead of 32-bit  4 bytes.
Also in GoAsmI find that I can use a mixture of 64-bit registers and
32-bit registers with certain instructions.
