Post by: Magnum on February 06, 2013, 01:42:20 AM
I am on my desktop right now.

My laptop boots and xp starts but no network etc.

Erunt did not restore from an older config, sfc /scannow did not do anything.

I have my sp2 install disk.

I dont have a disk image either.

Hi Magnum,

Do you have safe system restore points? You should always have a disk image. Tthat's important.

my recommendation is to stop using a linux boot to alter the c:\windows files   :P

sometimes, you have to alter or delete files or registry settings to get rid of something
99% of the time, there is a better way - a correct way

now, i know i showed you registry edits for file associations
i prefer to do it that way because the Folder Options/File Types tab does not give you full control
but - you have to understand that care should be taken

Vortex,

I don't have disk image or restore points.

Windows won't let me uninstall sp3.

I deleted some key files in the root directory and tried to reinstall sp2 using my sp2 install disk, but it says I need an earlier version installer cd (like Win 98).

I threw my Win98 install disk away last year thinking I would never need it.  :icon13:

I put those files back in the root drive from my sp2 install disk.

I tried to re-install the service packs that came with the laptop.

They install all the drivers for the hardware.

It got 3/4 thru and then it said the installer failed. (Windows installer)

I am pretty much out of ideas.

That seems pretty premature, IMO. If I understand correctly, your OS does still boot? So, why don't you have a look into the event log? There might be some hints what's going wrong.

But even if all efforts to restore your OS fail - at worst you'll be forced to reinstall the OS. That's not a big deal, and usually it's a very good opportunity to get rid of all the useless stuff you had installed over the years. Just make sure that you still own a valid WinXP CD and didn't throw it away last year mistakenly instead of the Win98 CD.

Real men love to live dangerously - that inevitably means that they'll sometimes get a bloody nose.

As I said in my last email, I have a valid XP install disk.

But it requires an EARLIER version of Windows to be already installed on the hard disk.

Like Win 98, Win 95.

I can still boot into XP, but many things are not working.

Device Manager shows everything working, but I have no network which means I can't connect to the Internet on the laptop.

Here are some more details.

After logging in, box comes up and says

Application Error

Exception EOleSysError in module Skype.exe at 0013FE7D
RPC service is unavailable.

When I start Event Viewer, I can see the log of events but I cannot open any of them to see what the error or warning is.

RPC service is unavailable.

Start, Run, services.msc;
Try to find RPC and start it - it's a really essential service

You should be able to save the event log to a file - for example in plain text format that can be viewed with notepad.

Hi Magnum,

Why not to use a USB drive to backup your data?
Title: Re: Bricked my o.s. on my desktop now :-(

My pendrive is 4 gb, but I have about 8 gb of zips.

that's a mess. Do you have a second cd rom drive? If so, you could use a Linux Life CD to burn your data. On the other hand, I've seen last week a 16 GB pen drive (USB 2.0) for 15 Euro. Not very expensive and it'll do the job.

I have Puppy Linux on a pendrive, but can get it's complicated CD/DVD burner working.

I wonder if it piggy backs off of the windows drivers or what.

I can't connect to the internet either from linux on a pendrive.

I read the article about Kaspersky's AV hosing a bunch of people's o.s., it didn't allow them to connect to the internet.

I recently installed and used it along with making a rescue cd.

My problems started soon after using it, but it may be a coincidence.

I was surprised it didn't have a cd program on it.

I plan on seeing if I can add a disk burner program to Bart P.E.s repair disk.

I found a good program that successfully put a linux version on Data Traveler.
I had given up on getting one on those pen drives.

I may be buying you some brewskis. :-)

I am still in the exploratory phase,  but I believe what I may have is a modified version or something new.

Three AVs found nothing.

I feel that it would be vernünftig to keep ruhig concerning what is involved in the Limpieza except via pm.

Gotta go and do some more command line work.

I think I have got most of the cleanup done.

Didn't take a reinstall like I had dreaded.

I found an unauthorized entry in the exceptions part of the fire    wall.

It was an entry with no name, so I deleted it.

How do I find the dam& thing that put it there ?

Drei AV scanners couldn't find it.

Thanks.

I have spent several days cleaning up after getting a modified pup face themes virus.

It wore me down, but I learned a lot and am putting together a "fixit" sort of program.

It will help minimize intrusions and the cleanup procs should work on a variety of any future nasty visitors.

Thanks sinsi.

Thanks to all.

I decided to go to safe mode to install a PSDK for the help files.

Don't know why they stopped working.

When I got to the prompt in safe mode, it showed a user and the password box, but I could not type anything.

To be safe, I am using a pendrive with Kaspersky's rescue disk utility on it.

I have a scan going right now.

Kaspersky has done a fine job and it's wireless network connection works right off the bat unlike Mint, Puppy Linux, and some others.

I like the feature on HP laptop that lets you turn on/off the wireless connection with the touch of the keyboard icon.

Virus scan came up negatory.

I want to go to safe mode, but when the logon prompt comes, it shows a
previous user, but that can't be changed nor can a password be
entered. ??

Regular Windows GUI works fine.

Any ideas how to fix it ?
