Title: Site to upload text files
Post by: Magnum on January 25, 2024, 11:57:21 AM
I am looking for a site to upload text files.

Can someone recommend one?

Hi Andy,

Why don't you ask our friend Google?

I hate when people do what you just did, JJ. I mean, you were asked a question, and then snarked out by waving your hands and saying, essentially, "You dummy--why don't you just Google** it?" Couldn't be bothered to post one site, eh?

** People should be fined by the grammar police every time they use this word as a verb ...

I understand your point, David. However, if I ask for help here, it's after I've spent an hour searching the web, and then I ask "in your experience, is storemytext.com better than savemytext.com?".

Well, that's one way to look at it. Me, I'd ask the question here first. Why?

Because the Google results you're going to get are pure shit. Sure, there are a billion + potential results. But what are those results? How many of them are sites that actually work well? that don't try to sell you crap? that don't automatically download "Update Your Drivers!" software? that don't require a credit card even if they're free?

And it's only going to get worse, I fear ...

If its related to coding etc, then possibly pastebin to upload text snippets - https://pastebin.com/ - which will give you a link to your snippet of text or code.

Or if you have github you can create gists - which is a similar thing really.

Examples:

Are they, really?

QuotePeople also ask
What is the simple website to upload files?
#1 Google Drive:
#2 Dropbox:
#3 OneDrive:
#4 MediaFire:
...

Oh, but since you asked for personal experiences: spend 20 bucks per year and get a whole site, with your name in the URL, such as http://www.jj2007.eu/MasmBasicQuickReference.htm (http://www.jj2007.eu/MasmBasicQuickReference.htm)

The point here is another one: You, David, asked Some basic Win32 questions for assembly programmers (https://masm32.com/board/index.php?topic=11639.0). I am pretty sure it won't be easy with Google, so I had the intention to help you and invest some of my precious time to investigate the valid questions you asked. Because I am one of a few persons (a Masm32 forum member) who might be able to answer your questions. So for you it was the right decision to ask a question here, since our friend Google will not give you 1,450,000,000 results as in the case of "are their any sites where I can upload my text files".

Gee, I would have thought 'DropBox' would have been a rather obvious choice !!??
For just text files you'd think the Standard Free 'package' would have to be more than adequate and really easy to Share and Link to etc.

Hi Andy, good to see you're still kicking :eusa_dance:

If you just want to have a backup use a flash drive or external drive.
My advice to clients is never use an online cloud store. As we are finding out, once it's in the cloud it's fair game for any hacker to grab. Not to mention the provider going out of business or shut down by the US govt

You should spread that message, Sinsi!

around 87% of Fortune 500 companies have adopted at least one public cloud platform (https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/ubiquity-cloud-computing-how-many-companies-use-why-some-lingutla/)

Thinking about this, I was going to ask, why is it that these days everyone thinks (or has been coerced into thinking) that the best place to store all their shit is in "the cloud"?

Well, at least one obvious answer: if you roam a lot and need to access your stuff from various "devices" not physically located where you can use a local hard drive for storage.

Hmm; what about creating an online link to your local hard drive(s), a private "cloud": possible? That might be a better solution, assuming you have some kind of personal web site set up at your home base. (I don't know enough about net stuff to know how this would work.) At least you'd have total control over it.

OH, I absolutely agree,.. it really amazes me, whether by individuals OR corporations.
"Gee, I've got a whole pile of (Insert; sensitive, private, personal, financial etc, etc) material, where should I store it for safekeeping ??" ..... "Hmmm I know, I'll give to some faceless unknown people to look after for me"  :wink2:  "They said I can trust them,.. they are here to stay !! ",....  :joking:

Yeah but odd isn't it that invariably when you establish an On-Line access arrangement with a supplier you usually get provided with some form of space and access to create your own Web Page etc, so you could (in effect) use that for access to your files whilst 'roaming', which (for 'Joe Average'), would be far easier than establishing your own 'Home' Server and at least means your ISP can provide both the storage and security.

Before I got a permanent IP address from my ISP I used to use no-ip to access my linux server from anywhere.
The DNS provider gives you a name (sinsi.noip.com) and you update your IP address with them when it changes.
No need for a website, I just use a samba share on the server.

Like this one (https://www.jj2007.eu/)? Guess where the image is stored...

QuoteUnlimited traffic
1 GB hosting
1 email and unlimited aliases
Unlimited email forwarding
HTTPS + HTTP2.0

With value added tax, my private 1GB cloud costs me a whopping 7.31€ per year - that's almost 8 US$

I don't think that's quite what I meant.

Do you host this site yourself, on your own server? That's what I was referring to. This is someone else's site that you hire out, correct?

[question answered by sinsi's last post above; yes, it is possible to host your own "cloud"]

No, that would be foolish. If our house burns down, all USB sticks, notebooks, external harddisks and the server would be gone. It's a lot safer to store my data with a company that specialises in this area.

Jochen don't forget stolen computers, own server crashes

What about cloud storage that comes suggested after updated Win10?

Worse security issues is if uploaded source code is from company is hacked, no concern hobby programmer about already published code

Let me suggest another backup storage scheme: local portable storage devices (HDD, USB thumb drive, etc.), with a redundant off-site storage device that periodically gets backed up to.

Having written this, I don't think I'd ever be on top of things enough to do that, plus I have no off-site site, but maybe other more astute folks might find it a good solution. (I have local storage backup, which is susceptible to the catastrophes JJ described.)

If your house is burned down when you are not at home,Source code and few kb. Obj and. Exe produced by assembler fits in smart phone memory
Newer phones comes with alot of built in memory, older phones can be upgraded with bigger ext sd card, if older phone breaks down you can pull out ext sd card and put in USB converter

97€ for one TB, not bad. However, I've had bad experiences with USB sticks that gave up the ghost after some years.

I have a small (2Gb) USB thumb drive that I've been using since, oh, about 2010 or so. Still zero problems. Anecdotal evidence, I know, but still ...

It's my SneakerNet device between my main (Windows 7) computer and my "scanning station" (Windows 2000).

Ssd and micro sd that is more expensive because its faster, but for older pc that only has usb 2.0 connectors bottleneck external ssd performance ,go for bigger usb drive instead of faster ssd ?
Older pad and phone not capable of record very hires videos those extra fast micro sd are for i doubt there is much advantage over buy standard speed micro sd ?
