Title: Advice sought
Post by: Magnum on December 28, 2012, 06:54:44 AM
Does anyone know if any consumer computer requires the motherboard and hard drive be replaced if the bios password has been
forgotten ?

I consider other opinions because my judgement can be colored by emotions.

People make mistakes or forget things.

Seems like a high price to pay.

What do you think ?

I would first try to clear the BIOS by using the corresponding jumper on the board and if if that does not work, try to find a replacement BIOS chip (if switchable).

Crack or clear your BIOS password with PC CMOS CLEANER (uses Parted Magic) (http://www.rmprepusb.com/tutorials/pccmoscleaner)

Andy,

If this is about the IBM laptop, I think their concern is that you are trying to find out how to crack a stolen laptop. Perhaps if you can demonstrate that the laptop was legally purchased from a mainstream source, your problem with them will be solved.

There is one item on the bottom that interests me. Shorting out two pins of the bios chip.
