Title: 6.0 volt SLA battery- is it dead ?
Post by: Magnum on May 23, 2015, 11:59:52 AM
I have a 6 volt 4.5 SLA battery.

I have been charging it for 10 hrs. at 500 ma.

The battery powers (2) 1000 lumen lights for my bicycle.

When I powered up the lights, they are pretty dim.

Is there a load test I can do to see if the battery is dead ?

is the bulb 6 V ?

see if you can measure the voltage with the bulb connected
that's as good of a load test as any

The bulbs are 4.5 volt, but I have a circuit that converts 6 volt to 4.5 volt.

Should I test the voltage going to the bulb ?

yes - see if it's 4.5 V
and measure the battery - both measurements with the bulb lit
maybe something wrong the the converter circuit

You are right.

The converter circuit was dead.

I will see if I can clean up the corrosion.

I live next to the Gulf of Mexico.

The salty environment is probably a killer to electronic circuits.

It turned out that the toggle switch was corroded.

The circuit still works fine.

I removed the switch and made the project box waterproof.

I have a feeling that moist air will still make it's way in. :-)

But it will have to work a lot harder.
