I have been creating rtf documents for years since they are smaller than doc files.
Used a newer version of Word and created a 47 Kb rtf file. Doc file was 27K and 14K for the docx.
Fortunately, Wordpad still saves rtf files correctly. :-) The same file shrunk from 47 Kb to 3K.

there is probably some truth to that - lol
they must have extended the spec - or used parts of the spec previously unused...
to add things like font embedding, margins, edit histogram - all kinds of info
so - the added file size isn't just a bunch of zeros (like the system registry - lol)
if you play with the options (or maybe use Paste Special), you can probably get the size down
Open in TinyIDE (attached) and save. Most RTF editors will achieve the same reduction.
M$ thinks (erroneously) the World needs their Office character and para styles, that's why they bloat everything.
Well, Microsoft own RTF and can do what they want with it.

TinyIDE is a good editor, makes slightly smaller files than wordpad.

Here are four identical files, first created and saved in MS Word, then reopened and saved in WordPad, TinyIDE and RichMasm (http://www.masm32.com/board/index.php?topic=94.0). The latter adds a bunch of info on last search strings, edit history, window position etc but with 488 bytes it is still much smaller than MS Word at 3,775 bytes.
WordPad and TinyIDE need 265/275 bytes, and that is what you can expect from a standard RichEdit control.
AbiWord is another option to create .rtf files.
Thanks for all the replies. I wasn't aware the M.S. developed the rtf format.
