Hi Magnum,

127.0.0.1 should point localhost. Any reason to modify this setting?

I didn't change that.

I am currently concentrating on figuring out how to reinstall I.E. 6.0.
(freezes up, slow)

I have tried every help I could find so far.

Under a user account belonging to the Administrators group, the hosts file is vulnerable and can be modified by malwares do redirect your internet access to other hosts.

I am not having any problems with redirection.

I use Firefox 99% of the time.

I don't know what's going on with I.E. 6 ?

Freezing up, slow, and no way to reinstall.

127.0.0.1  localhost

the local host loopback must be the first "visible" line in the file
after that, you can redirect other URL's to 127.0.0.1, which is redirected to the local host

as for the admin account - yes - it is vulnerable
i place my hosts file in another location, then copy it over there with a batch file
in fact, i have it split in two
i can use just the first half, which only redirects known virus payload URL's
or, i can use both halves, which also redirects many advertising URL's

Hosts file is probably ok.

I found out how to reinstall i.e. 6.0 sp2 version over the sp3 version.

Someone on a google group wants me to post how, but I told him I couldn't
guarantee it would work for others.

I think at this point, IE6 is pretty much doomed. I still use it on my Windows 2000 system, but in recent times it has problems with most of the web sites I visit, and for an increasing number of them it is unusable.

I only use I.E. 6.0 when I have to, which is very, very rare.

I find it interesting that now I.E. 6.0 SP2 version(older than sp3) is running smoothly compared to the newer sp3 version.

I have some theories on why.

I am happy.

Take care,
