I have been experimenting with bitmap buttons to try and improve the appearance of resource dialogs. This is a test piece that shows two buttons and a nice painting by Raphael.

I have another demo done, GDI+ to load PNG images, auto resize the buttons to match the bitmap sizes and a 16k 64 pixel icon to make it "pretty". It is still a reasonably simple interface and for example, the technique will make reasonable appearance "About" boxes along with many other things.

This is intentionally an understated interface style that you would use for business software, for consumer or gaming apps you can tend to use brighter interface components as best suits the target you have in mind.
