Does anyone know of a no frills freebee video converter compressor without the watermarks..
Not the online thing as I would like to shrink 500MB videos to about 50MB - Online would take a year and a day to do!

I don't know what kind of file types you want to compress but there are several options  ;)

an oldie but a goodie is Vidomi
a bit technical to use, as it has lots of buttons to mash
but, by selecting the right bitrates/sizes/etc, you can reduce a video pretty nicely

I always use ffmpeg : http://ffmpeg.org/  .  This program is a little hard to use at first ( its a command line tool ).  Someone wrote a GUI front end for the tool called winff : http://winff.org/html_new/ , to make things a little easier......

FFmpeg for Audacity 0.6.2 :

Dave,

I downloaded and tested Vidomi but found the quality rather crappy when converting FLV to VOB (MP2) format. I get very good quality conversions using DVDStyler then feed it through DVDShrink to make it fit a single sided DVD. Trick is to run DVDStyler at the highest possible bitrate then through DVDShrink to get the variable rate compression with a bit of sharpening during comprression. Have been getting excellent results for years.

i have never tried DVDStyler - i will give it a try
DVD Shrink, i have used for some time
i use it to re-master the video, then convert it afterward, though   :P
my favorite tool for conversion is AVS, but it isn't a freebie
