I found a discarded Compaq_Presario R4000.

It had XP Home, but could not see what hardware it had under XP Home, so I installed Puppy Linux.

It could not detect a wireless card, some models did not have a wireless card.

The wireless light comes on but can not connect.

It has an Athlon 2000 Mx 64 bit processor, but only 1 Gb of memory and part of it is used for the video.

Has anyone used an external wireless card on a laptop ?

I was hoping the hard drive could be used in my H.P. but no go.

Thanks,

Hi Magnum,

You could try Hwinfo32, a tool generating detailed hardware report under Windows :

Thanks vortex.

Only Linux is on the hard drive.

I will see if there is a rescue disk that can identify hardware.

I could put Win 98 on it ?

Windows 98 would be unlikely to recognize much of the hardware. If you have the files to do so you could temporarily install Windows XP, but given that a major OEM produced the system, a newer version of Windows would be likely to recognize everything.
Well Microsoft, here's another nice mess you've gotten us into.

seems like it's a vista-era computer
XP if you're lucky - windows 7 with some work, probably

I can't get into the BIOS, so I think that maybe the Esc and some of the F keys are "kaputt."

Maybe that is why it was thrown away, a malfunctioning keyboard?

You may be right.

I had a letter key that wasn't working right and I cleaned the keyboard and that key started working correctly.

(Lot of hair was in the keys.)

I have to get a keyboard for a desktop system, so I can use it to see if the onboard keyboard for the laptop "ist kaputt".

If it worked with an external keyboard, I would lose the portability of a laptop.

I will store it for a while. :-)
