« on: May 14, 2013, 06:03:41 AM »

Has the world/galaxy stopped ??

Van, take up a hobby, repaint the house, start running around the block, what ever it takes. Being a passive observer is a fast path to daytime television, senile decay and a heart attack.

Ja.. you are right...  :t
.. I've managed to avoid home maintenance for a leetle bit - but won't escape it  :bgrin:

Generally in my 'self-employment'.. I've come to a point where i must make a decision on which 'EDA'
So I asked Cadence Orcad and Mentor Graphics to give me a quote on their EDAs.
I was particularly worried about my high speed lines.

Cadence.. well no reply... Mentor gave me 37K (ZAR) [3.5K USD]. I 'freaked' and asked them for 20K ZAR max.
They're stalling..

In the meantime I started KiCad, free Spice and Wings3D.. and find that these packages, together, do a lot more than I expected.
And it's for FREE ?? Not only that, I found the interface easier than Orcad ???
Within this 5 day working week, I've managed to re-create all my components, schematic, pcb and 3D.
Next week I must just redo the workflow.. and I'm back in business.

Yup.. a lot happier I am  :t
.. and not so bored anymore..

no surprise, there
they probably have a room-full of programmers - lol
orcad is "the big gun" - as far as i know, they are still in business

anyways, you mentioned all the files associated with the program
i believe those are definition files
for example, if you "grab" a 74175, you get a quad latch with inv/non-inv outputs, clock, and clear
the 74175 definition file describes that package with its' inputs and outputs
it would make sense to have several hundred of these types of files, i think
although, i suppose you could group them together in a large library

Funny.. not one whisper from Cadence.  :dazzled:

But the local guys from Mentor have given me a 64% discount....  :t  if you don't ask - you don't get
I'm happy as a pig in sh...

While I'm awaiting delivery I've done a few 'overdue' household chores.. and even the wiff is happy  :icon_eek:
