W8 sucks, but Linux is even worst
« on: July 03, 2014, 07:36:22 PM »
My son has a UEFI laptop as a gift for his first communion: a Toshiba E1 AMD-Radeon with a W8.1 bullshit preinstalled that I send to the bin (backuped previously). It was full of demo software that I uninstalled because only took place, in such a way that it seems that I took something enough to the system went so slowly that could not be possible to work. So I convinced my son to install Linux... I didn't know that Linux is so behind with UEFI systems. I have tried to install many many linux distros, and I just managed to install successfully Linux Mint and opensuse, but so weakly that quickly went down for so stupid stuff: logout with a usb stick connected, trying to unmounting a cd, etc In such a way that the system hungs out and it was needed to logout in brute force, and therefore the system was not able to boot up.

Pfffff, suffering with W8 and Linux.

I believe that Linux community has a great opportunity to gain market quote due to a poor Microsoft politics with W8 and ceasing to provide support to 16 bits that are not able to take advantage.

Regards.

Hi avcaballero,

Linux can be very good for the business life. It can be a powerful database server, email server, NAS storage and many more. My first experiences with Linux was not good too. It took time to understand the philosophy. If you are accustomed to the command prompts, give a second chance to Linux. Later, you can try a distribution like CentOS or Debian.

The UEFI can be a real headache, I know. This is why I turned off UEFI on the IBM server at work before installing Oracle Linux. Do you have the chance to turn off UEFI?

The demo software is annoying but this how the hardware manufacturers are using them to reduce the prices. My strategy is to find the right device drivers and to re-install the OS. I make a backup of the system partition and I have a clean installation stripped from all that extra stuff.

The problem with Linux community is that some people there are very arrogant considering Linux like a cult or a manifesto against Windows. Those zealots are the cause of the damages.

You can make a new decision if you turn off UEFI. Du courage mon ami.

Have you tried disabling UEFI? Most BIOSs will have a "secure boot" option (or similar) to boot a so-called legacy OS.

Hi avcaballero,

Sinsi stated the right technical term. It's the legacy OS you should try.

Yes, I'm afraid i did it already, bios in legacy mode and partition table or something like this in ms-dos mode. I start thinking on recovering W8...

One of the things I wanted to to is start teaching my son programming qb in a dosbox , and this is not needed Windows for that...

Thank you guys

If you can get the win8 serial key you can download win8 from Microsoft and burn it to a DVD or USB stick.
Just win8, not the crap that OEMs shovel on.

..not the crap that OEMs shovel on.
That's what I do whenever I get a new PC - I ask them for the OS disk they installed.
They look at me funny and when they try refuse - I hand them back the PC and ask for my money - they give me the disk real quick  :P

when I get home I trash the PC HD disk, and re-install the OS... 'my way'

mine had an OEM partition
it took a while, puttering around
but, i finally figured out how it worked
and - i can selectively install the bundled software, now
some of it is nice to have
Photoshop Elements and WinDVD

but, it's nice to be able to install OS updates - THEN, install those   :P

Hi Dave,

Your OEM partition is probably containing an offline backup created with Microsoft's imageX.exe \ dism.exe   If you have a WinPE disc, you can restore the backup anytime.

i don't think so - the files are much like those of an XP install disk
there is a system check that verifies it's a specific sony bios at boot
and the bundled software are each seperate exe's

i have made several backups of the files
and, i know how to access the OEM partition

Maybe too late but you should give Linux Mint 17 a try. It can handle UEFI.

Cheers

Hi Greenhorn,

I think that the most Linux distributions can handle UEFI properly.
