One bad key press and everything below root was hosed

Regarding Puppy Linux 5.9

I accidentally deleted everything below my root directory. :-(

Just about nothing works now.

I once used testdisk to restore deleted files and directories, but was not able to install it in Puppy 5.9.3.

My last disk image backup is 3 days old.

Before I go that route, is there a Linux way to restore what I have lost ?
