Bloated Web Browser
« on: September 21, 2015, 08:05:28 AM »
What on Earth is with Mozilla FireFox?

Task Manager:

Code: [Select]
firefox        242,136kb
:dazzled:
I use Windosws XP, and I look at InternetExplorer
Task Manager:
Code: [Select]
IEXPLORE       23,108kb
folder size of InternetExplorer
988kb - Yes I know it calls many system dll's.

Mozilla firefox:
84.6MB - plus the folders in %APPDATA%, etc

Is there such a thing as a lightweight web browser.

I already have a slow internet connection most of the time, I think that firefox is not helping
matters. Most pages won't load with the version of Internet Explorer that I am stuck with, I
have got to look to see if there is a better way than firefox.

I hate bloatware

I used Pale Moon ( a light weight version of Firefox ) before : https://www.palemoon.org/palemoon-win32.shtml. This might work better for you...

Hello zedd151,

Intel Atom and Windows XP build :

Thanks for the link. I was just about to Google for something better than Firefox.
I already have a slow internet connection, and I think FF was dragging it down more.

So far the PaleMoon browser seems faster, though it is still somewhat a resource hog - around 93 MB
showing in Task Manager. I have adequate memory so that is not really an issue.

After running PaleMoon for a day or so, I will post my remarks about it.

-- I am so glad it is able to use Firefox extensions. :t

later...

Yup, I like it. It is Very similar in styling and layout to Firefox. But runs faster.  :eusa_dance:

Z,

Something I have been using for a few years now is Iron Portable. A Google clone that has better security.

I have noticed some quirky behaviour with PaleMoon.

It started showing web pages without apparently, using the 'style-sheets'.

Basically displaying just text, and the 'MASM Forum' logo.

I haven't changed any settings there, even rebooted...
So, for now I'm back on Firefox.

I downloaded PaleMoon Portable, and it is holding up okay so far.

Don't know why the full version had lost the ability to read the stylesheets though.

Pale Moon (XP version, portable) is working out great for me. Very fast.

Thanks to everyone that gave tips, links, etc.

I plan on making my copy REALLY portable; using winrar
to create a self extracting archive that deletes everything
when the browsing session is finished.

I extracted the SFX.exe, adjusted the homepage and a few other settings, used winrar
to create an autorun SFX, and it is working perfectly. :t

Now thats what I call portable.

edit to add:

And I have also installed a couple extensions to the package.

:)
