Do Americans still use Western Union to transfer money ?
« on: July 27, 2012, 04:12:05 PM »
Recently something I needed to buy came from a guy in Missouri and the only way he would accept payment was by Western Union to his address. Its very uncommon here in OZ so after some amazing amount of pissing around I got the transfer done, then had to ring a number to verify the transfer which was an operator in the Phillipines and then after I checked my online bank site the greedy bastards charged me $20.00 AU to transfer $50.00 US to this guy.

In OZ I can regularly use a credit card, direct bank transfer, Paypal and with some places their own online payment system. Does anyone in the US still use Western Union to pay for anything ?

We do in emergency's.

Hope you don't get screwed Hutch.

They just had a show about overseas scams and western union. Wouldn't surprise me its happened here in the US.

I use Western Union at times, and I know multiple other people who do, and never a problem. I would guess that their reputation for reliability is why he specified Western Union.

Well Microsoft, here’s another nice mess you’ve gotten us into.

i have used it a few times

it is a great venue for scams, though
W.U. does what they can to verify identities, but once the guy leaves the counter with the cash, he is gone
in today's atmosphere of identity theft, it probably isn't hard to run a scam without getting caught
seems like it might also be pretty easy to set up a sting, though   :P

if you have the patience, send a cashier's check   :t

The guy himself is OK, I have spoken to him on the phone, I understand why a small operator in the US does not have PayPal or direct credit card facilities but it would have been fast, cheap and convenient to do a bank transfer but he will only wear cash or Western Union so I used the latter. My main complaint is the cost, $20.00 to send $50.00 US was rediculous, won't be using them again any time soon. Here in OZ you can transfer money directly to a bank account at no cost.

I've never used them in the 20 years I've lived here. The ATM's work with debit/credit cards drawn on US or UK accounts, as do the shops. Most internet savvy can use PayPal, although they have some retarded rules about what the money is used for. Within the family we use a "Hawala" method and keep all currency local. There have been the odd occasion where people expect cashiers checks/cheques for certain types of transactions, but most businesses are fine with regular checks, and can seek recourse through the state's attorney if they bounce. International bank transfers are too complicated for me to care to repeat, unless it was a very large transfer.

WU would be useful if you need to get money to someone in an emergency, and is used by people who don't have bank accounts to cash checks, although WalMart would cash them too, and cheaper.

Perhaps there is a method where you can have someone pick up a pre-paid/empty debit card at WalMart, and have you fill it remotely. Or a quick google suggests they can do it all in-house.

While I'm not a huge fan of WalMart, they are prolific. ie I could direct you to several from here, but I'd have to go figure out where there was a WU outlet.
It's a pity the clowns in Washington DC don't understand the Constitution as well as Edward Snowden

that's actually a pretty good idea
we could set up a website to facilitate the purchase of the debit cards
tell us where your friend lives
tell us how much
we will locate the closest store and charge a small fee
they have these cards at most major shopping places (grocery stores, malls, etc)
