Hi All,

I have had two customers this week accidentally install the
Windows Nein, oops, Windows Ten upgrade.   One was a total
disaster and one I was able to revert.

If you have Windows 7 or Windows Frankenstein (w8)
and do not what to be upgraded to Son-of-Frankenstein
a.k.a. Windows Nein, oops Windows Ten (did it again,
apparently I can't help myself), then download and
install the following utility:

GWX Control Panel:

My advice to my customers - if you have Windows 7 then keep it (unless you want 10, then go for it), if you have 8.1, upgrade it.

Sometimes, it's even better to turn off the automatic updates service to avoid the GWX upgrade.

I have a Windows 10 insider machine that fails to run an app using a particular set of dll's. The app with dll's runs fine on a non insider Windows 10 machine. I don't know how to report this. I decided to opt out of the insider program but it appears it's a PIA to do this while still in an insider test cycle.

Any how, I decided to update another Win7 machine but it did not turn out the way I wanted so I reverted back.
Problem:
Thunderbird and Chrome were not available after update.

Question:
I had two profiles on this machine.
If I had only one profile would Thunderbird and Chrome show up as they were?

Hi Magnum.
Love your sense of humor.
My sentiments exactly.
You pay for:
the computer, windows, phone service , isp, virus program which you shouldn't have to buy,
electric and others that I have forgot.
So Microsoft in their infinite wisdom decides that you shall upgrade to Windows 10 or ELSE!
I don't know about you but I rebel at having things shoved down my throat.

Your're right.

That's why Linux is my primary O.S.

This is from someone else, but I thought it was cute.

QuoteLinux is hard. No, Really. It is hard. If you want "easy", buy a "smart" phone.
If Windows 10 is "the last straw", why did you wait 9 straws?

------------------------------------------------------------------

Right now I am having phun.

My external drive that I use to backup files and disk images, is read only in one distro of Linux.

I am getting a lot of help, but no luck so far.

It's a paperweight.

An exorcism is seriously being considered.

HI Magnum,
This what I did in preparation for the Windows 10 debacle.
I have Windows 7 pro 64-bit installed.
I just installed Linux Mint 17.3 rosa xfce 64-bit on the same ssd drive.
Linux Mint took care of all of the dual booting problems for me.
So far seems to be working great. Of course I am an absolute Linux
beginner. So we never stop learning UGH!
Of course my GoAsm programs most likely won't work in Linux.
Haven't got that far yet....
All this caused by the Commercial Microsoft Company!!!!!

Great. Glad you are happy with it.

Linux has a lot to learn, but you will find it has a lot to offer.

I have never gotten any viruses or malware.

And download speeds are 4X that of Win XP.

Look into installing Wine.

It can run a lot of Windows programs.

I use it to run mspaint, irfanview, and a multiple timer program.

I keep Windows around because it can make boo-table flashdrives easier than Linux.

Hi shankle,

Did you try Wine on Linux?

QuoteWine (originally an acronym for "Wine Is Not an Emulator") is a compatibility layer capable of running Windows applications on several POSIX-compliant operating systems, such as Linux, Mac OSX, & BSD. Instead of simulating internal Windows logic like a virtual machine or emulator, Wine translates Windows API calls into POSIX calls on-the-fly, eliminating the performance and memory penalties of other methods and allowing you to cleanly integrate Windows applications into your desktop.

No I have not tried "WINE" on Linux yet.
I have enough knowledge about Linux to be dangerous :bgrin:

Will do so after I get better with Linux.
For EX: I like to play the kpatence solitaire that comes with Linux. (Using Pclinuxos)
I finally found out how to update the repositories on Linux Mint.
Got Kpatience installed and when I clicked on it, it just sat there and stared at me.
I assume Linux Mint already has Wine installed.
I just loved the dual booting with NO problems. Makes the puter a tad slow
but livable.

Not sure if you can run Virtual systems on Linux, but if you can maybe run windows as a virtual addition just for programming.

Did find this searching.

I am partial to Ubuntu Mate at present primarily because there is a version for the Raspberry PI 2.
