I'm skeptical... it looks like space dust and mirrors.

 - Besides our dear working on the algorithm to draw a fuzzy picture, we have a 'nerd' type 850,000 lines of code (out of 900,000 lines) to get this fuzzy picture.
- 850,000 lines  WTF was he doing. Copy-n-Paste.. He must have known what he was doing.  :bgrin:
- A lot of media shock and awe, not to mention the immediate danger to us being swallowed up whole.
- There sounds like there was a lot of in-house fighting on this project - Abandon or not to Abandon.
- A suggestion of a Nobel prize for a fuzzy picture.

Let's have a look at the money - We're they going to abandon the project ?
You put a lot of time and money into this, you must have something to show for it.... even if it is fuzzy
Make a media storm about it, adding a bit of danger. (Nothing sucks like a black hole)
It's starting to sound like another great scam we have experienced.

Real scientists do science for many reasons, least of all media attention.
This thing is far away... there's a lot of gravitational lensing before the waves/particles get to us - this could just be an anomaly.
There's supposed to be a black hole at the centre of our galaxy.... a lot closer, why are we not looking there - to close for comfort maybe - maybe Hubble will prove black holes don't exist, so it's easier to place a 'black hole' so far away, and say it is one.  ;)
We still don't understand gravity (ok we know it sucks), so to claim a 'black hole' is absurd... back to the money and media attention.

K_F as you prob know the physics of gravitational effect is fairly well understood ... first discovered by use of radio telescopes it transpires that black holes are among the Brightest objects in the universe as in the process of ingesting matter the stuff collides in the Vortex [Rotation anticlockwise prob southern universal hemisphere .. i wonder if anyones tested that idea] .. causing the matter to break up emitting huge amounts of energy across the spectrum .. like a giant but rather random and somewhat more mobile  CERN collider [other colliders are available]  so i doubt the photograph ??? is showing what you think its is allegedly showing [the media usually paraphrase stuff in a muddled way .. after all most of the journos i knew were alcoholics and definitely not clued up on astrophysics ] ....
as for the desire for publicity
thats exactly what science is all about .. the reason is that if you do then its significantly easier to get funding !!! in fact its not just science  art is exactly the same and has been for many millenia as is basically been hijacked as propaganda [ eg using lapis lazuli in the pics of Bronzinio ... [Portrait of Eleanor of Toledo with its extensive blue background chosen because lapis [a semi precious stone ground to make the blue] was a very expensive pigment .. thus hints at the wealth of the patron and possibly the subject]

It turns out Black-holes progress to White-holes in the future in the latest theory, that might explain (at least mathematically)
the information loss paradox problem posed by Hawking et al.  Think Black-hole becomes Einstein-Rosen worm hole with matter
transition into White-hole, spewing out highly energetic matter (gamma ray bursts) in the future. The theory combines Einstein's
relativity, nuances of Newton's gravitational laws with advances in Quantum theory. Interestingly I actually theorized the same
thing (minus the math) about 6 years ago in a drunken stupor......

A racist view of the phenomenon?  :icon_idea:

spewing out highly energetic matter (gamma ray bursts)

Perhaps that could illuminate the dark matter

Ok. I think I solved Dark Matter (again).
In essence fools gold can be explained as shiny stuff people covet
but when push comes to shove wont pay for it.
Strangely, it's typically found close to actual gold deposits. Therefore
miners in the old days (hutch early years  :azn: sorry master
just had to) did'nt believe finding such was a bad omen.
Nature is a funny bed fellow, she is female after all and
probably blonde. Given these absolute facts the theory of
Dark Matter is enevitably simplistic. We know, known matter
is being clumped by something gravitationally superior. We
can see its effects via gravity lensing. WIMP theory tries to
explain this by creating (out of thin air/vacuum ) particles
that are super small and super massive, yet
non interacting..... ??? This presents a HUGE problem.
Enter The Nobel/Tamato of theories;
1. Our current understanding of the The Higgs (mine: So far anyway)
A field that adds mass to particles. Yet, all human observed particles
even given Higgs field mass, do not exhibit the observed
phenomenon which we attribute to Dark Matter.
2. Hawking's virtual particles (spontaneous particle creation +
anialation within a vacuum) Initially theorized to explain concepts
of the information loss paradox and energetic space-time fabric.

Long story short - Dark Matter IS consistant of the WIMP paradigm.
Hawking particles that have avoided anialtion and taken on
Higgs mass over time. Space-Time in particular. Non interaction
built in. Proofs in other people's theory. Copyright masm32.com

Signs of age, I suffered cosmology at UNI long ago and with such ancient technology the laws of conservation of matter and energy were deemed to be sensible so something being created out of nothing (unless you are deity) flies in the face of what was then sensible science. Postulating things like dark matter has much the same feel as postulating "ether" to fill the spaces between space time extended matter, it may fit a theory but the empirical data will be a long time coming.

Now with the serious things of the world, as of last Christmas when I had a gut bug from a bad frozen pizza, I can now drink the occasional beer so in respect of such weighty matters, I will ingest a "Pure Blonde" late in the evening.  :winking:

Very interesting, they might just have proven
that dark energy does not exist and the universe
is not in an ever accelerated expansion scenario
as initially predicted.

@jj: Cool follow up = But, did you notice
the data skew (as debunk) has serious
issues. This is beyond exciting ! Who will
win out.... cant wait

I have a 'cunning plan' for a new atomic structure, that just blows away all this stuff.
Naturally I cannot talk about this yet (must check it out properly - make sure it is 'sensible').
