Running windows 7 pro 64-bit.
I have Windows update set to download updates but let me
choose whether to install them. I recently had to reinstall
windows so this is why I am having this problem.
I sign on windows updates and wait and wait. Nothing happens.
When I go to log off, I get a message about windows wanting to
install updates. This does not let me choose what I want to
install. I am also running GWX control panel.
Is anyone else faced with this problem?

Vortex

Hello shankle,

This update is solving some important issues :

Installing and searching for updates is slow and high CPU usage occurs in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3102810

This hotfix is helpful for the slow update search problem.

Thank you for responding Vortex,
I'm afraid of this update as it's doing a lot of thing I know nothing about.
Tell me I am wrong.....
Would GWX control panel stop it if windows 10 is hidden in any of them?????

Vortex

Hello shankle,

The update KB3102810 solved the very slow Windows 7 update detection problem at work so nothing wrong about it.

The GWX control panel can be stopped in the future by another Windows update, that's a probability.

Thank you very much Vortex,
That solved a very bad problem.

Guess I spoke to soon......
I had about 150 updates to install and I updated about 100 of them
with no problem. The last 50 are acting like it was before I installed
kb3102810. Slow to just hanging.

Jack,

When I reinstalled Win7 64 a few months ago there were 217 updates waiting and the update would lock up if I tried to download them. The trick was to do 25 at a time until all of them had been done. If the upgrade icon appears again, just run the GWX app again.

Thanks for responding Hutch,
I uninstalled kb3102810 and reinstalled it.
No change. I am left with 50 updates.
It just hangs and hangs.

I have windows updates set to download but let me decide what to do.
I am also running GWX control panel. This didn't have any affect on
the 1st 100 updates. :(

Vortex

Hi shankle,

As Hutch mentioned, the method is to complete the installation by selecting a number of hotfixes in every session of Windows update. This is very important especially while updating 32-bit Windows 7 setups as the Trusted Installer service starts to consume considerable amounts of memory. 32-bit operating systems ( except some enterprise server OS versions ) are limited with 4 Gb RAM. The hotfix KB3102810 is doing the job and catalyzes the search of updates.

shankle

Thanks for responding Vortex,
I have been doing 10 to 15 at a time.
That worked fine for the 1st 100 updates.
But not after that.

I am running Windows 7 pro 64-bit.
Not 32-bit....

Vortex

Could you try to delete the content of the Windows update cache and try again updating?

net stop wuauserv

rd /s /q C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution

net start wuauserv

shankle

Thanks again Vortex,
Since I didn't understand your example I used the
GWX control panel to clear windows update cache.
It still hangs in Windows update....

The way I see it there must be a mix of my programs that is causing windows
update to fail. Ex: ESET SMART SECURITY, GWX Control Panel, download
updates but let me decide what to install .etc

hutch--

Jack,

Turn OFF the Eset AV app while doing the upgrades. The GWX app does nothing else than change settings so that the taskbar icon to upgrade to Win10 so that it does not appear. If it hangs doing updates, try a lower number of updates until it does not hang. I had to do this while reloading Win7 64 on my older i7 as it locked up if I tried to load too many updates.

sinsi

I have let a computer look for updates for 10 hours, gave up and restarted. On the restart button was the icon to install updates then restart.
It installed two updates, on reboot updates worked as usual. I've now used this on a few computers successfully (not all).

You might want to look at http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/windows_repair_all_in_one.html
I've used this to repair updates too.

As usual, YMMV

To Hutch,
Turned off ESET SS.  It still is hanging.

To Sinsi,
Wow some program. I ran it and hope there is no damage.
Windows update is still hanging. :( I need a "GROAN" icon.

Update  4-17-2016
Got all my important updates and the selected recommended updates.
Am I happy? Hardly. Pitiful for a multi billion $ company to have a mess like
Windows update.

A member of the My Digital Life Forum found a solution for the slow Windows 7 update problem :

KB3172605 does the job.

http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/19461-Windows-7-Hotfix-repository/page1067?p=1253845&viewfull=1#post1253845

The prerequisite is to install KB3020369 :
