Windows update and Redmond's special features for Windows 7
« on: February 23, 2016, 08:46:28 PM »
So today I allowed Windows to download its updates. At the end of the process, there is a fat box telling me it has to reboot to make changes effective. OK, I click "force reboot" - without closing any of my open windows!

After a while, dark screen and a sinister warning that ONE application refuses to close itself, and that Windows will use brute force to shut it down. And the countdown runs....

Your turn: Which application?

No cigar, fearless

The only application that refuses to shut down after you click "reboot" in Windows update is ... Windows update :greensml:

if you wait, the process will probably terminate
some updates, like those to .NET, continue to execute even after a re-boot

go have a capuchinno

OK, I shouldn't fumble with Windows settings :icon_redface:

But I just wanted to test how my editor's menus look with various aero and non-aero themes. Inter alia, there is a (very old) dialog that lets you pick colours for e.g. the captions etc. Unfortunately, it has no effect; after a while, I see in the smallprint "only for accessibility themes". Oops, so how do you change the caption colour from that ugly grey that had crept in during my fumbling back to the nice blue I was used to? No way, you can't!

So finally I decided to go for a restore point. Windows 7 promises not to change any of my files, and since yesterday I had not done any significant changes to Windows, so off we go, reboot.

It takes AGES! I was about to hold the power button for 5 seconds (power off the brute force way) when I finally noticed some activity, and wow! Windows restarts, and wow again, my blue captions are back

So I launch my editor in order to continue coding, and guess what? It doesn't open the file that I expected. It opens the file I was working on two days ago :eusa_boohoo:

A quick check on \Masm32\MasmBasic\Res\RecentFiles.ini confirms my suspicion: Redmond, you promised not to change any of my files, but here is the proof: recentfiles.ini is an OLD version. Damn liars, and incredible IDIOTS, who told you to search the whole hard disk for ini files, and "restore" them? What else did you change behind my back???

P.S.: M$ has really gone mad, see http://www.w7forums.com/threads/system-restore-and-js-files.16589/
Quote
Twice now I have been bitten by the Windows 7 system restore behavior of
deleting non-system .js (JavaScript files) - and .exe files. I do not
remember XP being this aggressive. I develop web applications so I have
lots of .js files I have written. If they are newer than the system
restore date, system restore deletes them. This last occurrence deleted
hundreds of man hours of my work
- with the delightful message that "no
personal documents have been affected."

P.P.S.: Here is a list of file extensions that get "monitored", i.e. that might be deleted ("restored") due to a system restore:
