New Audio on my computer.
« on: September 21, 2012, 02:59:58 PM »
For years I have used an old TEAC stereo amplifier to drive the speakers on my 2 computers that I work on. A couple of days ago I pushed the GO button and nothing happened. Pulled it out, opened the case and there was power up to the switch but not coming out of it. I also managed to short the testing screwdriver on the case and popped the circuit breaker for the power circuit in the house. After such trevails I thought PHUK it and put the case back together, shoved it out of the way and trundled down to the inner city store of Jaycar and bought a brand new 100 watt RMS stereo amplifier.

Staggered back home carrying it, unpacked it and plugged it in and all works fine. The 100 Watt RMS seems to work OK with the speakers. Its interface is all digital gizmos and it has a remote to control it if you want but the main gain it is dead silent. The old TEAC was OK but this thing makes no noise at all. It has enough grunt to blow your brains out with speakers on the computer table so using it at normal levels should not overload anything in a hurry.

Funny enough, i rang around a few places including a PA company that handles old stuff and the guy has a pair of full class A amplifiers that he only wanted peanuts for but I thought, my eyesight is well past complex electronics so i did not bother. With the PA guys you can easily hook 1000 RMS watt amplifiers for not that big a price but it may have been a bit over the top for a sound system on a PC. The other factor was I would have had to obtain a reasonable pre-amp to drive a big power amp so i gave up and bought the one from Jaycar.

Even there I was tempted, they had a 200 watt RMS amp the same size as the 100 watt one I bought which was not that expensive but I thought my tabletop speakers may not have survived the experience so I went for the 100 watt RMS version. May fix the old TEAC one day but no hurry.
