Windows 10 Update nightmare!
« on: May 17, 2018, 05:31:11 PM »
I spent the better part of yesterday trying to get a batch of updates successfully installed.  I kept getting either Download Failed,  or update is pending restart. Upon restart, it was as if nothing happened. No updates were installed or finished being installed.

There is one in particular,  "Cumulative Update for.... "  couple hundred megabyte download,  it has failed 18 times! I even tried downloading the updates manually direct from Micros**t.  That way, I was told the updates were already installed.  WTF?

Anyway,  I was desperately scouring the net for sound solutions to the problem.  The very last one suggested enabling auto start for Bits,  cryptsvc and two others I cant remember.

Seems like its working,  I'll post the results shortly when the updates are finished installing on my computer.

Posting from DumbPhone.

later -->

okay it seemed to work!
That info was provided here:

How to Fix Windows Update Error 0x80070bc2

Code: [Select]
Type the following commands in Command Prompt window. To execute them, press Enter after each one.
SC config wuauserv start= auto
SC config bits start= auto
SC config cryptsvc start= auto
SC config trustedinstaller start= auto

Security Center is no longer reporting problems with the Update status.
I spent the better part of a full day on that.

And while all of that was going on, my computer slowed to a crawl. I considered a fresh install, but then I would lose a lot of work, settings etc.
I was at wits end for a while. The only thing I could do was to deny internet access, as windows kept trying to download updates that were already present. Then the speed returned to normal, just the nagging Security Center icon with the red overlay kept showing up.

Also during that time it seemed like Windows Defender was working in overdrive, complicating the problems I was having.
I watched in Task Manager while apparently WD Antimalware was scrutinizing the attempted re Updates (the ones that were really already installed, but not reported as such)  Jeeeessh!!!!

---even later---
After checking the Updates in 'Programs and Features' in Control Panel, I noticed several were missing --- trying to get those resolved at this time.
I hope all goes well, I can't afford to waste another full day on this issue.
Regards, zedd.

After I fixed the problems in the previous post,  Windows Update went into overdrive and decided to upgrade to the latest build of Windows Home edition.  After downloading for I don't know how long, it is still in the reboot/installing cycle.

Code: [Select]
Working on updates  18%

Don't turn off your PC.   This will take a while.

Your PC will restart several times.

This is after a full hour of watch the spinning circle thing juggling it's balls.

Microsoft authorized spyware.
Cortana sees all hears all. Knows when I cough,  fart and use the bathroom so the folks in Richmond know all about my habits.

        :icon_redface:

Edit = 30 minutes later still stuck at 18%....

Another hour later,  at 19%. It will take another 5 hours or better at this rate.  Once I get this installed,  I will promptly set my network connection to 'metered connection' that is the only way I know that I can prevent such updates.  I can always choose to update specific updates manually,  even though that can be a pain as well. But I will at least know what I am getting.

I will most likely reinstall from my most recent backup.  It took me more than a whole day to get win 10 settings,  etc the way I want them. I am pretty sure that those settings will be screwed with this "upgrade". Thank you very much Microsoft.

At least I can still use my phone for internet while all of this is going on.   :icon_confused:

Edit = 3 hours after the first boot today,  still at only 20%... At this rate will take 15 hours total....

Z,

I know of people who only had dial up no longer using the internet as win10 kept using all of their bandwidth. I know that Microsoft are dumping chyte on my win 10 box at least daily and at their leisure keep changing some of my settings on a regular basis. On the bright side, you will sure get good at fixing your settings with win 10 as you will keep getting lots of practice.

My Win10 box says "Version 1709 build 16299.431", so the nightmare is still ahead of me 8)

I wonder if non-English versions are updated later - mine is Italian.

Hi guys.  The problem apparently is that I gave WU my 32Gig SD card to use when it requested 10 GB storage space. Reading from the SD card must be awfully slow,  even though it is in the USB 3 port through an adaptor.  The reason I didn't use the SD  card slot is since the bios doesn't see it (no drivers)  it may foul up installation.  I thought using the usb3 port would be faster than  using the SD card slot as well.  I haven't looked at the read/write speeds for the two SD cards I have as it never has been an issue before. No money available for faster USB flash drives,  so the alternative was to use what was available. The SD card.

Okay now.  4 and a half hours later only at 26%. I should just go on the rest of the day and forget about it.  Maybe in 12 hours or so,  it will be finished.   But what worries me,  is if the computer decides to go to sleep on the installation thereby corrupting it.

@jj.  IIRC thats the same build as mine.   Oh wait,  it just now rebooted for the first time since installation started...

That's a little better.  After the rebooting it went quickly to 44% that's slightly encouraging.

---> later after the third reboot things are going much faster now.  Probably in Windows proper now.  Up to 84 %.

It is just taking so long for everything.  Every time I get back to coding again,  something else happens.    :(

Well fork me!! 5:10 to install the latest build.

Version 1803
Build 17134.48

Everything seems to be in order. My desktop is the way I left it, just as Windows Update promised. Nothing obviously new yet.

But if anything has changed in a negative way, I'll post it here in this thread.

Simple. Don't use Edge. I stopped using Edge on my first day with Windows 10. Using IE currently....

Anyway, I turned on 'Metered Connection' supposedly I can then install updates at a time of my choosing. WU says it will not update automatically while 'Metered Connection' is enabled. Time will tell. Of course I will probably get constant nags telling me updates are available.

One slight change so far, in Defender Security Center the icons are rearranged. No big deal though just have to pay attention. Also the Edge icon was put back in the task bar. I don't recall doing that myself - but possibly?

Welcome to Windows 10, the updates do things like that regularly. Ever since I built this box over 18 months ago most updates turn my monitor off after 20 minutes, it used to be even worse when I first installed it. Once you get it all up and going there are a few toys that help to keep it better behaved, turn off the telemetry (spying) etc . . . .

I also today found a way to shut Cortana up for good. I think. I use CC Cleaner and in that program there is a pge to 'uninstall' program. Cortana was on that list. There was no real uninstall however, only the option to 'Stop' Cortana. Checking with Task Manager I see that Cortana is still there but 'Suspended'. I am unsure if I would have had that option before the update.

later ----> searched around for other 'helpful' things to turn off as well. Went to my MS account and turned off everything I could there as well.

Nope nevermind, cortana is doing 'something' but I don't know what. It says suspended but I do notice cpu and memory activity there.

no Idea,I choose to use English language as standard,to not be confused by some programs not support my native language and some do,so I keep it all to english when I can, makes it much easier to receive/give directions "copy that, paste that, render that and use english tutorials for those programs"

I expect your Italian version to messup your code, exchanging every "real10",with "Bella Donna"  :P

There it is - April update installed 8)

I clicked on "show me new features", and there it hangs now, endlessly. But I managed to switch to a tab that shows a box "You'll need a new app to open this ms-get-started". I am tempted to click OK but the button is disabled, he he :greensml:

There are "answers" to the problem at answers.microsoft.com but watch out for your mental sanity. Micros**t at its best :t
