Microsoft ditching yet another blunder is nothing new, its Universal Windows Platform (UWP) was a flop to start with and I guess the penny has dropped on yet another one of their stuffups. I notice the article references Win32 rather than Win64 so there may be some realisation that trying to push everyone into the latest incarnation of their software is not the smartest move.

Project Silica proof of concept stores Warner Bros. ‘Superman’ movie on quartz glass
Quote
Microsoft and Warner Bros. have collaborated to successfully store and retrieve the entire 1978 iconic “Superman” movie on a piece of glass roughly the size of a drink coaster, 75 by 75 by 2 millimeters thick.
...
“Storing the whole ‘Superman’ movie in glass and being able to read it out successfully is a major milestone,” said Mark Russinovich, Azure’s chief technology officer

Support for Windows 7 is nearing the end

More news from Redmond

After 10 years, support for Windows 7 is coming to an end on January 14, 2020. Going forward, the best way for you to stay secure is on Windows 10. And the best way to experience Windows 10 is on a new PC. While it is possible to install Windows 10 on your older device, it is not recommended.

Bleh,

Microsoft trying to force everyone onto Win10 is nothing new but I am wary of the level of control Microsoft want over PC users. Win 7 64 can turn it off so they lose control of that PC so it is a good idea to keep win7 going. The other alternative is a Linux box that they have no control over at all. Generally win10 64 works well but you have to continually work at blocking the spy ware and any other tricks they want to sneak through.  My Win7 runs a normal SATA SSD with no problems, I tried an NVME SSD but the chipset does not support it.

Note that today, 15 January, M$ just made me update my Win7 machine. I had hoped that I would never, ever see again those stupid messages - nope, they just continue. And Adobe wants to update Flash, too
