What is the most windows like linux?
« on: March 12, 2020, 05:10:13 AM »
Getting tired of Microsoft spying. And having to disable cortana with every windows update. She seems to come back like a bad ex. So I am checking what options are there. Unfortunately most of my programs are windows. So I wonder how compatible is wine.

Linux Mint 19.3 Tricia will come close if you set it up right. I have recently built myself a file server on an old i7 860 with 16 gig of memory and it does the job well. Desktop looks OK and there are many of the open source apps I use in Windows that are available in Linux so you can get most things done in it. Development is another matter, you would need to get the swing of the whole GNU package and be familiar with the guts of Linux but it can be done if you are interested.

There's a Linux distribution called "Zorin OS" that is intended to have the appearance of a Microsoft operating system ( I think it's supposed to look like Windows 7 ). Otherwise , I would probably pick one of the major distributions like Ubuntu , Fedora , Mint ( I've used Fedora for about 5 years , alongside Windows , and it's worked really well for me ).

Hi xanatose,

I could recommend CentOS, Scientific Linux and Oracle Linux as server operating systems.
