Time Synchronization

Hi
Time synchronization is a technique that is required when we communicate between different machines over a network.
I found here in the forum and in some documents on the internet how to use the Network Time Protocol (NPT) and how to adjust the time taking into account the transmission delay. Since I do not connect to multiple servers and do not establish multiple connections to one server, I have not implemented the statistical evaluation for a NTP compliant client. I just correct the time with the data collected from a single connection.

To check reliability and response speed, I put the code in a test piece that connects to some well-known NTP servers. There are a few favorites on my site, but I would like to ask if you can run the binary (maybe more than 1 time) and share your location and the information displayed from the console output.  :biggrin:

Hi,

   The program did not run on Windows XP or earlier.
It did run with windows 8.1.  Seems to be a quick
program.  It did not appear there was any way to
capture the program output.  Was there specific
information you wanted?

@Fortrans: I've successfully tested the app on Win7, Win8.1 and Win10. I don't have an XP machine anymore :sad:

@HSE: It is actually a NUI32 application without an interface. I just redirected the debug output to the console. I did it this way because I assumed that not all have DebugCenter on their systems.

I changed the app a bit to perform 5 retries and output the results to a text file called GetNetworkTime.dbg (in the same directory as the binary). This change should solve the copy of the collected information on all operating systems.
When the app finished, a DialogBox is shown displaying "NTP-Server requests ready." The time it takes for the app to run depends on the number of timeouts when a server fails to respond or a UDP packet is lost.
Basically, I want to know how quickly this group of servers is responding from different places around the world, hence the location information.

My observation from the past few days is that results vary over the course of the day. The response time seems to be more or less stable for each server in a certain range, but UDP packet loss seems to be the main problem.
From my location (Switzerland) the servers can be divided into fast and slow, those that respond in less than 100 ms and those that take longer.
I will be interesting to see more information from other places in the world.

Thanks all for the supplied information.  :thup:
I analyzed the timing information returned by all of the tested NTP servers and found that the time it takes for the server to prepare the returned message is negligible compared to the time it takes to transmit it over the net.
The larger the transmission delay, the greater the inaccuracy of the time correction on the client side. This is the reason to choose a server with a quick response.
I've found that the biggest dependency is the connection to the internet (residential area or in a business connected to the internet via fiber optic), the distance to the server, and the time of the day.

For now, I'd say the best options are time.windows.com, time.google.com, and pool.ntp.org in that order.
It would be great if there was more data to back this up.

Hi
I've gathered information day and night for some weeks now and found a clear winner in terms of reliability from several points around the world. It's not the fastest, but I almost got a response from the server.
It's time.windows.com. I hope that it will continue to do so in the future.  :biggrin:
