Hallelujah, they are all finished !
« on: October 22, 2021, 03:21:37 PM »
Just finished off the cleanup up of my old box, the 2 front fans had got noisy and when I pulled the can apart, there was the mountain of crap packed all around the fans and into the disks behind them. Cleaned it all out, cleaned the 2 old fans but they were still rattly so I replaced them with a couple of "Deep Cool" leftover fans and suddenly it became quiet.

Dug out the two side covers that had not been on the case for years, scrubbed them up and put them on and it now looks like a computer again and is really quiet. The Atermiter is finished so I am "free at last".

My experience is: You can only ever pray and hope when you have to fiddle with the hardware. That costs nerves.
You have to know the facts before you can distort them.

I am OK with hardware, its just the amount of work to get it all running OK but with the old box, I have just done a clean install of Win10 as the last install was the first one 6 years ago and over time it picked up a few glitches so a clean install solves the problem. Its just that I have to configure it all again and de-crap it so I can find my way around it again.

Ah, the joys of decrapping Win10. Spent a fair bit of time getting all of the boxes talking to each other via Microsoft networking (mutter ...) and have been reinstalling heaps of software. Fortunately much of it does not need to be reinstalled, I just have to find it all but I am starting to get there. With a computer that I have been using for 6 years, there is a massive amount of stuff on it so there is much to find again yet. :eusa_pray:

Its been good though, the old box runs like a new one, the old accumulated glitches have all disappeared with the fresh install of the OS and so far everything works.

For the new box I am currently using, the can did not have an extra 5 1/4 slot for a DVD writer as I needed two removable disk holders so I bought a USB LG DVD writer that seems to work fine. I would like to get all of this chyte finished so I can go back to what I normally do, write software and process video. You can get really tired of hardware an OS configuration.

You can get really tired of hardware an OS configuration.

That's right. Does decluttering the operating system really do that much?

By itself, not much but with an install done 6 years ago and the number of OS changes over that time lead to an accumulation of glitches and minor errors that started to become annoying so a fresh install was necessary. I put very little data on a boot partition and all of the other storage had not been altered so its mainly finding all the things I need and re-installing a few things that needed to be done that way.

Now I did have a question for you, with the high powered liquid cooler you are using, what CPU are you using that needs that much cooling ?

It's an Intel(R)Core(TM)i7-7820XCPU@3.60GHz.

That is a very powerful CPU, I looked up the specs at Intel, a socket 2066 CPU with 8 cores and a max frequency of 4.3 gig, a bit higher with max turbo boost.

While its the same maximum wattage as my older i7 5820k versions, its a later technology with 14nm where the Haswell era are 22nm so it should be more efficient that the Haswell CPUs.

I run my 5820k at 4 gig as I have enough cooling to do that. I am mainly into socket 2011-3 because I can also use Xeon processors and have a couple of 12 core E5 2690v3 boxes.

Well, these are also very good processors. Will XEON be the future?

Probably not in the same way, the later serve CPUs like an Intel Platinum are very hard to find workstation boards for and the few I have seen are prohibitively expensive. The CPUs are starting to be available on the second hand market for under US $1000 but the combination of board and CPU plus enough memory would keep you poor for some time.

The socket 2066 CPU and board you are using was tempting but the gain was not enough to justify the cost so I did not go that way. I am in no hurry to replace the socket 2011-3 boards and CPUs so I can wait until I need more hardware. I tend to measure hardware on whether it does the job for you or not and to date the i7s and Xeons I am using can comfortably handle the worst of my abuse.

That's a pretty pragmatic point of view that I can get on board with. I'm using the new machine mainly for development, as I'm currently preparing for my next visit to Geneva.
I also use it to check complicated positions in correspondence chess; I want to avoid nasty tactical surprises.

Maybe it's time to cool it with liquid helium?:)
Who knows if it's chess engine vs chess engine? :)
Tryed to make simple chess engine in asm/gui, tutorial says it's perfect for 64 bit cpu to handle the 64 bit patterns in one instruction
Bigger unicode masks simpler for gui checking legal moves or not
I have latest PC game from  2010, it empties battery in no time
After that I went console :cheaper = lot of games instead of gaming PC

my none asm creations

For the moment, probably not. Have a look at this test page, please; there the engines play against each other.

That's remarkable. Normally, the engine must also be integrated into a GUI. There are several ways to do this; I prefer this one.

great
mine so far is only ca 20kb,checking the normal moves,so far,not special castling, special check/move away piece impossible because it causes check

What protocols does your engine support?
