Assuming you just want to recover the old files, couldn't you just extract the HDD from the old machine and attach it into the newer one?

Interestingly enough, the best technique I have for transferring files from one computer to another is through Tight VNC file transfer. It seems to be faster than normal Windows to Windows file transfer by normal network sharing and you can look through far larger lists in VNC that through normal network sharing. I keep a dedicated box with XP on it as my NAS (network address server) for large categories of data with 4 TB dedicated to the task but for file or directory search, the VNC approach is far easier and faster to use.

That's 'zactly what I ended up doing. (I call it ScrewdriverNet.) Works fine.
Assembly language programming should be fun. That's why I do it.
