Interesting. I wonder whether I could install Win98 on a VM, and how legal that is...

Device driver not found: OEMCD001
No valid CD rom device drivers found

Windows 98 setup files were not found.

Since I got those messages, that would mean it read the CD.

So how can it say it can't find the setup files ?

Another mystery. :-)

Well, it's been there for years (I remember using it at least 5 years ago) so Microsoft definitely know about it.

We have discussed this previously

you want a DOS boot floppy with a set of drivers for the CD drive
boot from that, then run setup

in the past, i have created "El Torito" CD's with the DOS boot stuff on them

Magnum

It doesn't have a floppy drive.

And I have also tried a flash drive.

I think it is unfix-able because Win 98 is about 18 yrs while my laptop is only 10 yrs old.

then, you need an El Torito CD with the DOS boot stuff on it
the drivers create a CD device that is recognized by DOS during the setup process

dedndave

... if you google around, you can probably find the boot stuff in ISO form

If your laptop has a SATA drive, Windows 98 doesn't know SATA, only IDE. Can you change from SATA to IDE (legacy) mode in the BIOS?
98 booted from CD using floppy emulation, which loaded DOS (including oakcdrom.sys and mscdex, exe) then tried to run setup from the CD.

I've managed to get Win98SE running. The first option in the list is a preconfigured VmWare VM, and you can get it running if you accept several reboots and click "Skip file" whenever it asks for the non-existent CD Rom in D:

Unfortunately Win98SE can't handle shared folders, so it's pretty isolated 8)

JJ,

Format one partition as FAT32 and you should be able to access that with win9x.
