I hooked up another monitor that is larger to my laptop.

I would like to turn off the display that is built in.

I looked under settings, but I can not even find that it detects that it is present.

Each screen is identical.

I hooked it up using the connection that has 9 pins.

It has a USB port, not sure if that is in or out.

USB ports are bi-directional

but...
laptops often have a utility program that accompanies them
they are really handy because they usually give you functions you don't otherwise have
but - you may find a way to turn off the monitor with Alt-Fn or Shft-Fn keys, etc
see if you can get the PDF that describes the key strokes

Hi,

For the laptop I have connected to a TV (two displays, built in
screen, TV), the the Windows, Control Panel, Display thingy does
all the selection and control.  The BIOS has some control on
what works in each display as well.  The DVD player stopped
working on the TV, and the display properties needed to be reset
in the BIOS to work again.

HTH,

Steve N.
